Free Credit Report from Equifax

131

Most of the banks use Equifax to check credit ratings for loans.

You are entitled to a free copy of your Equifax Credit Report if:

  • You haven't received one in the last 3 months; or
  • You've been declined credit in the last 90 days; or
  • You've had an item corrected on your credit report.

If you do not meet the criteria, a once-off Equifax credit report is currently available for free.

This report includes your score ratings but does not include the exact score value. It can be obtained for free from Get my Credit Score, which obtains data from Equifax.

Unless you need to get a loan, I wouldn't bother getting these credit reports. You end up giving away a lot of useful information about yourself which could be compromised in a hack attack.

Either way if you are affected adversely by a mistake or ID fraud, the credit reporting companies have to remedy the issue, you are never left out of pocket. There really is no incentive to keep it updated.

    • Great i filled it out a month ago. I didn't know it can be used for a hack attack? I thought it was all safe. Far out.

      • You missed the news stories that went on about Equifax for months??

Think it's listed as one of the biggest if not the biggest hacks of social security details in history

I fixed least a couple of incorrect record. Such as credit card I've closed long time ago still marked as active.

Credit reporting companies have zero interests in fixing this kind of issues and they often asks longer than a month wait time to look into it only after you raised a case.

    • sure these agencies are scumbags and getting incorrect information fixed is a pain but waiting until you need credit probably isn't the best plan, better off being proactive.

It asks you to create account even for free report which will require your identity details

How do you expect to get a credit report if they don't know who it's for? Should they just pull one out of the pile and hope it's yours?

      • But they need to create an account?

In past they would just get your ID details and email you report. There was no requirement to create account.

Umm…. these guys already have your details which you have provided to other creditors. Lol

At OP, try running a Illion credit report. I found my score with them is much worse than Equifax.

    • Many payday, bnpl and telco companies only report on illion. That could be why

      • i just did my free check with illion and sure enough there was a credit enquiry by klarna even though im sure i clicked no thanks during the check out. does anyone know if Klarna report to Equifax too?

        ref https://www.creditcheck.illion.com.au/Auth/Login?ReturnUrl=%…

        • Probably not, the cost on reporting on both wouldn't stack up for bnpl

Shopback had data breach and they still shamelessly post deals here

People should support incompetent shopback. Since the breach I get a crazy number of phishing emails and scam calls.

Shopback was not transparent on what was leaked!!!

Let alone their non existing customer support.

        • so why

          People should support incompetent shopback

          • -1

            @[Deactivated]: I meant shouldn’t support shopback.
Thanks for the OzB who negged me. Obviously you must be affiliated with the dodgy shopback mob.

There are 3 agencies in AU.
If you are checking your CR, you should check all 3 agencies!

Experian, Equifax and Illion (Dun and Bradstreet).

    • I've used the last 2 and they were very inaccurate. I submitted some evidence to amend errors.

Checked back after the time they said it would be amended, error wasn't fixed. Contacted them only to be ignored.

Seems to be common practice with these guys going by Google/trustpilot reviews

A couple of points here. From what I've experienced some time ago…

        1. Not all providers (banks etc) use all three agencies when checking a CR. Nor do they only use 1, most fo the time.
Therefore you will usually find variation between each.

        2. If you have completed the variation request and/or error documentation and the error still remains. Call them and request why the error isn't yet fixed. It can take 4 or so weeks to review and put the update through, with another 2 or so weeks before the update is visible on the CR.

        3. Should they not have responded advising with a justification as to why the update hasn't been done (ie. found your request was not valid, thereby the default or the likes remains), then you can raise a case with the AFCA.

        Hope this helps!

        • Thanks I'll look into it

@Bretttick: If agency won't fix it or delayed fixing it, raised it to AFCA / finance obudsmen and can ask for compensation on the ground of missed opportunity etc

I had one case last year where they had wrong info of someone listed on my account, name was same but person was in diff state etc. I was able to get $500 for the hassle created by them where asked for $1000.

            • @Seven8Nine: Wow gonna definitely try it for sure. I don't know if it will work though as my credit score was pretty good to begin with

  • Score is not even instant..

They bought data from Facebook where I used a fake name but my real phone number, now I get fudged in the ass when I apply for credit card or refinance because they think my primary name is my fake one and they won’t change it. Idiots

Confirming your details to get this report just helps them get a better picture of your info.
These people are not your friends.

  • you should get your report from all 3 agencies, Equifax, Ilion and Experian to confirm they have the correct information.

They all offer it once a year free and you can actually check it more often than that, they don't enforce the limit.

  • +3

This is not a deal. It's data mining.

  • I just registered with finder.com.au and they use Experian. They are supposed to send you your credit score once a month for free.

    • score and report are different things

  • I just applied for a bank account, not a credit card, with HSBC, "…As part of the new account application process, you have agreed for us to electronically verify your name, address and/or date of birth against the information held with the credit reporting body Equifax. This is just to let you know your details didn't match the records held on their file…." , They opened my HSBC Global Account anyway but out of curiosity I ordered my free Equifax report. They show my current address as: […] MARKWELL Place AGNES BANKS NSW 2753
I do not live at this address, I have never lived at this address, I have never heard of this address. (I live in Melbourne.)

    • You had better sort it out with them.

  • Some thoughts after reading various OzBargain comments above, I now feel that a variation of "If it aint broke, don't fix it" applies. My new bank issued my new account in spite of Equifax showing a wrong address that didn't match my Driver's Licence because, you know what, the banks know that the data accumulated by these data brokers is of very poor quality. So, even if it is broke, don't bother trying to fix it because these credit score companies don't make it easy, they don't have your back and unless it's actually stopping you from getting credit that you need, well forget it.
