Why Buy PlayStation 5 Remastered Games?

Hello, I'm considering buying a Playstation 5 soon, but there is one thing that is really confusing me. I have seen quite a bit of Playstation 4 games remastered on Playstation 5. Isn't PlayStation 5 backward compatible with Playstation 4 games? If so then what is the point of buying Playstation 5 games on PS5? Apart from improved graphics and additional content. Couldn't the developers just put it as DLC instead? Since is basically the same game. Wouldn't it be more economical just to buy the Ps4 version instead of ps5?

Examples:
- Ghost of Tsushima Director's cut
- Hitman 3
- Assassin's Creed Vahalla
- Death Stranding Director's cut
- Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Remastered is a specific term given to upgraded games that have significantly upgraded visuals from the ground up.

None of those titles are remastered. They just have PS5 upgrades which includes higher resolutions, framerates, DualSense features like adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, activity cards, 3D audio etc.

Some PS4 games have free PS5 upgrades but others are paid.

    • I skipped the ps4 generation and have no idea how the game works these days.

I remember back in the ps2 and ps3 days there weren't many upgrades and remastered. Most games were a sequel or a new franchise. Ps2 worked fantastically just like ps5 that has backward compatibility with ps1 games. The only games ps2 don't have are the upgraded versions. Which left me confused on ps5, but now I get it thanks for the information.

The PS4 generation was fantastic but pretty much all the hardware releases were pretty underpowered. So games had limited resources and had to make sacrifices. Whether that's lower quality textures or resolution or framerates etc.

The PS5 has much higher headroom and therefore these games can be updated to run much better at higher quality and performance with added bonus content and features.

Subscribing to PS+ will give you 3 free games a month as well as access to 20 titles in the PS Plus Collection to play some of the best PS4 titles. Start there and you won't need new games for a while.

Here are the games available in the PlayStation Plus Collection.

        From Worldwide Studios:

        Bloodborne
        Days Gone
        Detroit: Become Human
        God of War
        Infamous Second Son
        Ratchet and Clank
        The Last Guardian
        The Last of Us Remastered
        Until Dawn
        Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

        From third-party publishers and developers:

        Batman: Arkham Knight
        Battlefield 1
Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles Edition
        Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
        Fallout 4
        Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition
        Monster Hunter: World
        Mortal Kombat X
        Persona 5
        Resident Evil 7 biohazard

    • Ghost of Tsushima Director's cut
    • Death Stranding Director's cut
    • Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

These three have additional content and upgrades not found in the ps4 version.

    • For some reason I thought Integrade was the follow on to VII Remake. Turns out it's VII Remake again but with an extra episode

I really loved Death Stranding, and I think it's the perfect game for the new trigger system for R2 and L2 that Dualsense controllers have. The ps4 version is also capped at 30 FPS as far as I remember, so I'm looking forward to the PS5 version for the extra content, as well as having a better frame rate and Dualsense triggers to make the game more immersive.

    • Yeah I'm holding off until it's patched 60fps, will play it through from new when it comes out it's also a $10 upgrade so very good value considering I got it new for $16 last Xmas

  • We're still in the transition stage between console generations. It also doesn't help that PS5 console stock has been so severely limited since its release.

You might still be seeing PS4 versions of games being released alongside PS5 games for at least another year or so before it's PS5 versions only.

  • I'm excited for Death Stranding, new content, 4K 60 fps and also makes use of the new controller it's also an $10 upgrade since I've got the PS4 game, I think they're doing this as the total lack of decent PS5 games atm

  • Because of the graphics. Some games are worth playing multiple times. And with the better graphics. You will enjoy the game a lot more.

    • What games do you recommend?

      • Judgment ps5 is just a visual upgrade and unlocked to 60fps but for some reason, they want you to buy a completely new copy even if you own ps4 version.

        • Yeah your right is basically just the same game, but with improved graphics. I really don't understand why game developers are selling the same game onto ps5 instead of making it exclusively on it.

It feels kind of like a scam selling you the same thing, but with a higher price. As stated above some game lets you upgrade it for free or with a fee. So from my perspective, there's even less of a reason why to buy ps5 games since the price for ps4 games can drop really quickly and are much cheaper compared to ps5.

Well, the dumbest thing I've ever done was to buy FF7 Remake for PS5 on release day for around $119… a week later, the PS4 version was on sale for something like 18 bucks, which includes a free upgrade to PS5… only thing you'd be missing would be the Yuffie DLC which you could buy separately. It was one of those buy first, actually think about it later kind of days. Of course, the plus side of buying the PS5 version is that you don't need to download 90GB… but still, in retrospect, it was kinda stupid.

To answer the question though, yes, the PS5 has almost perfect PS4 backwards compatibility, but those games aren't really built to use the hardware properly. Most PS4 games are locked to 30 fps and run at resolutions lower than what the PS5 could handle. Most PS5 games run at 60 frames per second (double the performance of the PS4 version), they often run at higher resolutions with better textures, faster load times, better audio, support for the features on the dual sense controller and sometimes include the addition of ray tracing as well. PS5 versions are also often smaller than the same game on the PS4 due to improved compression technology, so you end up getting more out of the storage available on the console.

In short, you should generally buy the PS5 version, the hardware is a big step up from the PS4 and it's not worth limiting yourself to a previous-gen experience to save a few dollars.

    • Hm… well ok I'll take your advice, but I'll probably wait for ps5 games to be cheaper or if lucky enough get it 2nd hand with a good price

Or option #2, find a few friends with PS5's and buy/share games as a group.

Also, it's always worth doing your research for each title as several games have cheap or free PS5 upgrade paths available where it doesn't make sense paying a premium for the PS5 release.

Sorry for the grammar I’m doing voice to text in this post.

As someone coming from Xbox and Xbox game pass the PlayStation five is a very expensive console to own.
I personally prefer purchasing my games digitally and having Xbox game pass you get so many games included and I find that I am more willing to try games I normally would not because of the costs.
I just got a PlayStation five and all of the games I want to play are $125 for the base game.

Now aside from the call of duty games I pretty much play everything on game pass so it doesn’t cost me much and when I want to buy a single PlayStation game for $125 I just cannot justify that.

This isn’t me saying one is better than the other I own both I like both I think both are great however from a cost perspective you can easily purchase Xbox game keys on various websites and use a VPN to save money.
For example you can purchase Xbox game keys for other countries start a lower price use a VPN to redeem those keys.

Even finding cheap keys for Gamepass I managed to stack a maximum of three years of game pass for under $180.

For PlayStation there is no way or option to do purchase keys from 3rd parties or save money you must either purchased the disk or go directly through the PlayStation store which is insanely more expensive than Xbox.

Just my observations from having both consoles
