08 LANCER VRX 6 SPEED CVT Help

Hello there anybody here can tell me more about the 08/09 LANCER VRX models?

I'm looking closely at one with the 6 SPEED automatic and paddle shifts.

It is cheap and currently in limp mode I'm willing to spend a little to fix it been told it may just overdue for a transmission service and flush???

Anybody here know more?

Is it a 6 speed or a CVT?

    • 6 SPEED automatic?

Lol. You need to research some more on CVTs

        • Doesn't help that it's how some manufacturers advertise their CVTs

But yeah, nothing worse than a Mitsi CVT…

"just overdue for a transmission service and flush?" does not put a car into limp mode. I would allow enough in the purchase price for a new (second hand) transmission and goodness knows what else. If you cannot get a mechanic to look over it before you purchase, walk away.

    • guy needs to do his homework

if the car is say $1,000 w/ 100,000km then it may be worth the risk of a completely refurbed auto/cvt whatever the hell is in there.

      Bank on a dead transmission.

So a refurbed transmission is already a $3-$5k operation so at the end of the day, you're at least $4k in.

      Is it still worth it?

Without any other details we're all guessing and wasting everyones time. But hey such is the Mitsubishi lyfe.

    • I say avoid it entirely. I say he's just guessing it's every the tranny. Lots of screwing around for a 13 year old economy car.

      • my opinion on a lot of these things, if there's any doubt in your mind theres no doubt.

if you have to ask then you really shouldnt even bother

leave it to people who know wtf they're doing

        OR

at least make friends with a local mechanic and ask him

eg i have a mechanic i trust and i ask him before i push a shitty Lancer his way

The current sludged up oil with billions of metal particles inside is probably the only thing holding it together , guarantee you do a flush and put new oil in it will fall apart within 5000km

    Walk away OP

  • Don't you already have a CJ Lancer?

    • Want an upgrade

      • +6

A CVT in limp mode isn't an upgrade unless you'd only owned a bicycle.

  • A cvt is infinite speeds, not 6. While they drove like ass, the Mitsubishi cvt is generally ok, as witnessed by the low price of them from the wreckers, around $400.

The limp mode may be completely unrelated to the cvt though, again, Mitsubishi are pretty reliable, checking for codes would be a good idea.

    • Transmission fault on dash

      • Could still be other things. Range switch, wiring etc. At any rate, trans is $400 odd, then factor in labour, new fluid etc.

Not worth it if not simple fix

@Willco88: What were you hoping for? No one can tell you what it is without seeing the car and actually diagnosing it, so it is either cheap enough to take the chance on it, or it's not.

            • -1

@brendanm: Was just curious if anybody has similar experience

              • +4

@Willco88: Just because someone has the same light on, doesn't mean it's the same problem. Could be a $40 switch or sensor, could be a transmission. No one knows.

Buying cars with problems is for people who can work on them, if you're paying someone to fix it, it's likely not worth it, otherwise the seller would have done it already.

  • why don't you buy a RalliArt version ? VRX is not that much of a upgrade

    • Lend me $$$

      • +2

        I don't have $$$ even to buy a CJ :P

  • I would avoid buying this car. They had appalling paintings and the clear coat started to peel off within 4 years of owning it. Sold it for $4.5K after having electrical issues. Get SP25 Mazda 3.

Thanks for your help I'll be speaking to a few Mechanics today

  • So it could be anything as simple as a full flush and service which is $500+ or as much as $2000+ for a replacement

    • Congrats, you're 0% closer to knowing what's wrong with it.

      • Yeah that's cars though

        • That's what I told you. You have to actually diagnose it, guessing won't get you anywhere.

          • @brendanm: Well I'm not sure if I should risk it

            • @Willco88: That's the point. As I said above, if you can't do the work yourself, why would you look at something that could be expensive to repair?

              • @brendanm: I guess I like to hope I'll get lucky and it will be simple

                • @Willco88: Then roll the dice and buy it. Asking the same questions with the same amount of information is going to continue getting you the same answers.

                  • @brendanm: Well I'm trying to negotiate with the owner in order to mitigate my costs

                    • @Willco88: You'd have to be picking it up for $1 to justify the thrashing the car has likely had.

Limp mode is problem 1, you realise how many other problems might be hiding behind it?

You haven't had anyone say this is a wise decision, yet you're still attempting to buy it…

You can lead a horse to water…
