What Price Should I Hold out for an i5-10400/11400f?

Hi guys!

I am building my first pc to use for gaming with a gtx 1080 I got from a friend, but I still haven't gotten my cpu; where I was thinking of getting either the i5-10400f or 11400f. Do you guys know what price I should be looking out for with these cpu's? or maybe any suggestions on some other cpu's that would be better than those cpu's in a similar price range?

Thanks in advance!

  • have you got a mobo, or not yet?

    • no not yet, I was thinking of getting the Asrock B560m steel legend, is that any good? It would be nice to have in-built wifi so I don't have to buy an extra part.

Not sure why you're holding out, now's a good time to buy a CPU.

My view is that a 10400F should be around $200, 11400F should be around $280. For reference, the superior 5600X is around $350.

At those prices, my view is that the 10400F is the best value for gaming if you can get it for $200. Has been for a while and will continue to be at around that price.

You can probably get $200 if you wait or shop around - if you're impatient, here's $209 - https://www.centrecom.com.au/intel-core-i5-10400f-29ghz-6-co…

I got my 11400F for $200 through Shopping Express (was on special).

buying 10400f be aware any mobo that's not z490/z590/b560 will hard lock your RAM at 2666, which can cause frame time inconsistency in CPU dependent games (online multiplayer, or open world games, won't affect AAA games as much)

buying 10400f with b560/z590 means the top M.2 slot is un-useable. But since B560 can be cheaper than z490/z590, you might need to compromise.

your other option can be Ryzen 5 3600, which is a touch better than 10400f (by default), and will be even better if you factor r5 3600 can be OCed.

    Performance be like: 10400(f) < 3600 < 11400(f) = 10600k(f) < 11600k(f) < 5600x

you shouldn't need any better CPU than those in my comment for a GTX 1080.

You can also reply me to ask if a motherboard of your choice is a good pair with the CPU you decide.

    • Thanks for the info!
I think I will go with a B560 mobo then, do you have any recommendations that have inbuilt wifi? I don't mind losing out on some of the flashy features for a lower price.
(btw I went for the 10400f)

MSI MAG B560M BAZOOKA from scorptec or umart = $129 (local pickup) + shipping

downside = no wifi, good side = beefy power delivery good even for i7s, good memory OC capability, has 12v/5v RGB and everything you kinda need for a everyday motherboard. there is a spare slot for WiFi card so no big deal.

if you want in-built wifi then TUF B560m Plus WiFi from MSY = $179

even beefy-ier power delivery, and in built WiFi, does basically everything the bazooka does.

you can grab a mid-range WiFi from MSY = Rotanium (PCE-AC1202), basically have a realtek chip inside and a long wifi antenna which is not bad consider it does 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz, or if you want the best WiFi adapter you can buy Rotanium (PCE-AX3001) which uses Intel AX200 and the newest WiFi gen6 and Bluetooth 5.0 technology (which is what ASUS TUF mobo are using)

MSY hired some factory to built those WiFi card and surprisingly good quality. (found out those card whilst chatting with the local MSY branch here, bought a few and all been working great)

If you need anything better I'd recommend MSI Z490 A Pro from MSY or Umart which is the cheapest mobo that have a 6 layer PCB for high-end memory overclocking, and good enough power delivery to run an i9. bare-in-mind you need a BIOS update if you go 11400f or 11600k.

        • Appreciate the detailed reply!
Is this wifi adapter as good as that mid-range card from MSY, considering I can get the one from Amazon for $21.39? (I have a $15 discount code on Amazon)

@daiwik: this is about the same chipset but with heatsink, If I were choosing between the 2 I'd go TP-link. but if I have $55 I'd definitely go AX3000.
The $36.39 option is Amazon US, and shipping won't be free(min $49 spend), cheapest local is $44.91 from Amazon which every store sells at that price anyway.

            • @OMGJL: I only have 100 Mbps from my ISP, so would there be any real difference between the Amazon and AX3000 cards?

              • +1

@daiwik: WiFi 6 are slightly better in terms of WiFi Connectivity, especially when there's lot of devices connected to your WiFi. Better WiFi Chip/driver means something too. Plus you get bluetooth.

                • @OMGJL: Alright cool. Just checking but this is the same mobo as the one you linked right? At $109 this looks like a steal

                  • @daiwik: if the shipping was not too much then yea definitely a steal. Same mobo as what i suggested be4.

                    • @OMGJL: Oh shipping was free for me (in syd), thanks I’ll pick that up and the wifi card.
thank you so much bro 🙏
