FYI there are now "ads" (shows Google wants to promote) at the top of the launcher, but there are a variety of ways to work around it.

    • Seems most android boxes have these "ads" though

      • +1

Its actually part of Googles move from "Android TV" to "Google TV", which is the same OS but redesigned UX. Part of that design is the new "promoted shows" bar at the top. So yes, eventually they will all have that bar.

anyone know if a new version is planned soon as 2019 is sounding a bit dated. I hating buy tech then a new version comes out a few month later and old version is forgotten about

Got the 2015 model when it came out, still getting updates.

anyone know if a new version is planned soon as 2019 is sounding a bit dated.

      it is due this year…

i got a google tv in the meantime…

      • I got a google tv earlier this week.. haven't been very happy with it..

Just ordered this instead - now you've made me maybe regret it.

        • haven't been very happy with it..

          Why?

          Ours works fine.

@jv: It's struggling using Syncler to play 4k content.

General menu navigation etc is not bad but slightly more sluggish than the mibox

Overall still ok for the price, I'll keep it in my travel bag for when we are allowed to travel again!

            • @The Hobo: Post back when you get the Nvidia.

Curious to see how much faster it is…

              • +1

@jv: Got my Shield Pro today - still early days, but the difference in performance is chalk and cheese. It is clearly so much more powerful.

Everything just runs so fast and smooth with zero lag/delay. Highly recommend this.

                In order of performance

                1) Nvidia Shield TV
                2) Xiaomi Mi Box
                3) Google TV

I do like the remote on the Google TV though!

My use case is Syncler, Kayo, Optus Sport. Syncler is the one that seems to struggle the most with Google TV, everything else was fine and it's still good for the price.

                • +1

@The Hobo: Thanks for the review…

I'll stick with the google tv for now and jump on the bandwagon when the new models come out, hopefully later this year or early next year…

      • I will hold off then 😊

        • You might be waiting a little while. The release cycle has been every 2 years so it's due but the Nintendo Switch uses the same chipset and the recent upgrade to that had nothing new besides an OLED screen. Usually a new Switch precedes a new Shield so it's not likely that we will see a new model in the short term. .

    • Why would you say its dated? Only things they don't have is 120hz 4K and EARC but no streaming service offers lossless audio anyway, so no point in that or 120fps Android gaming. Until TV or streaming companies add more features to enhance their products, Nvidia Shield Pro has everything you can want. Including Dolby Vision and the best upscaling in the business. If I was you I'd be waiting for the new model to release so you can get this model cheaper. Theres no new tech they could add in the next year that would make any difference to a media box.

      • Going to be a while before it's particularly relevant but the only thing I've thrown at this that it can't handle is 4k AV1 playback, but you still have to go looking for that content, it manages to cope with 1080p AV1 despite the lack of decode hardware.

I expect that AV1 hardware decode would be the future proofing that people would look for in a newer model (rumour is it's going to be/is required for YouTube 4k HDR) , otherwise the old one is fine. For this price it's a bit of a steal if you want to run something like Plex Server on it.

        • That's what they will use in the future for 8K content on YouTube. They currently use VP9. Even the 8K TVs cannot decode AV1 yet, as there's hardly any content of it. Even then there will be different apps for Android that will usually be updated. Also you can encode or put it in another container.

          • @Whisper Quiet: They're using AV1 for 4K HDR now (I pulled a sample from YouTube to test on the shield pro, so have first hand confirmation they're using it). Most higher end 2021 TVs have AV1 decode, 2020 models TVs started introducing it as it's supposedly a requirement for the next version of Google TV/Android TV. There's plenty of content that can use it, but not much outside of HDR 4k on YouTube that requires it.

AFAIK shield pro doesn't meet the requirements for VP9 4K HDR via YouTube either, though that one I didn't personally test. Almost no content out there for this yet though.

And note yes, some at least, 8K TVs from 2020 and onwards support AV1 decode. 2020 was basically the year AV1 decoders started appearing, this shield just missed out being a 2019 model. I haven't checked every brand but any of the Mid-Higher range 2020 and later LG models of 4k (and all 8k) support AV1 decode.

            • @[Deactivated]: I'm still seeing VP9 as the codec for 4K, HDR and 8K. Maybe there are couple videos with AV1 but I haven't seen it from the ones I've checked or downloaded, even in the last week. Looks like it only has a problem playing 4K HDR 60fps with VP9 on a downloaded file, but plays from the app. No Sonys TVs have AV1 codec yet

              • @Whisper Quiet: https://9to5google.com/2021/01/16/google-android-tv-av1-code…

                https://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/n/Sony-to-adopt-AV1-video-codec-o…

The Japanese company has confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that all of its 4K and 8K 2021 models – both OLED and LCD – with Google TV will support AV1 hardware decoding.

(Note it seems they may not support it for local files, just streaming, for whatever reason - guessing just their local video player is old, eg, Plex doesn't support it yet but VLC does etc).

It's not much of a problem today, encoding stuff to AV1 has only really just become feasible for anything but the most viewed content (Netflix has been the biggest user but it's been optional). It's more of a future consideration for 3-5 years time. Ultimately it's lowering bandwidth costs for Google, Netflix etc and they're keen to push that requirement for their higher bandwidth content. They're not going to cut out older devices but they're not necessarily going to get the highest quality options.

YouTube is encoding 4K HDR in VP9.2 and AV1, the shield supports neither in hardware decode, If you're seeing it play from the app and not downloaded that's likely the app transparently falling back to 4K non HDR (or the shield able to process the 1440p HDR stream in software and it transparently falling back to a lower resolution, I found it was able to decode 1440P HDR av1 for my test file).

The VP9.2 file size google serves is generally around 2x the AV1 file size for 4K HDR (at whatever settings youtube select), so it might have an even harder time playing that, depending on the file.

That's not to say the hardware can't give it a go, YMMV depending on the file itself and how difficult it is to decode, just without the hardware decode I've had no luck.

Given there's hardly any YouTube HDR 4K content and most of it wouldn't benefit from HDR that much anyway it's not a big deal at the moment. And given the current processing costs of AV1 encode it's not likely to show up on videos without many millions of views for the moment or testing videos for the next while, but then we fall back to VP9 Profile 2 and face the same problem on the shield, and it's pretty clear AV1 is the longer term direction.

                • @[Deactivated]: I encode everything in HEVC (H265) 10 bit which is the main codec for 4K. Id rather they use H266 in the future as that's the optimum standard but its still in beta testing. It has far better compression.

  • Ah shit I got it for $280. This is a great price.

  • -1

I stay away from Kogan. They charge ridiculously for the shipping, even if for purchases over $100. Better stay with Amazon.

    • +1

You care about shipping fees. Is Amazon cheaper overall?

      • +2

Electronics sold on Amazon have Australian warranty and sold directly by the manufacturers. With Amazon Prime membership, free shipping for anything. Without Prime membership, orders $39.9 or over have free shipping.
Electronics sold on Kogan are grey imports without Australian warranty. You will have to send the faulty electronics back to Kogan. They will send it to the manufacturers overseas for the repairs.

Better to cut off the middle man.

        • +1

Kogan website claims Official Australian stock including 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty.

          • -1

@bkksam: This might be the exception.

            • @Euthyphro: FWIW, Kogan handled my RMA for a Shield Pro 2019 without issues. Didn't have to wait for them to ship overseas and they shipped it back with express too.

              • @askbargain: Correct, you need to send the item back to Kogan, not to the manufacturer for warranty issues.

    • Free shipping if you have kogan first.

Their service has been excellent thus far for me

  • +1

You can't get the Kogan first trial if you use Klarna as a payment method. The trial requires you to purchase with a credit card.

    • +2

Activate the trial first with CC. Then buy the shield afterwards.

      • Damn I should have done that. Thanks for the info, good to know.

  • +1

arg. just bought this yesterday for 300.

  • You can also get a trial for Kogan First to make delivery free.

    Not for all locations.

  • +2

Bought mine from TGG sale recently. Been awesome for streaming on a LG CX. Using Moonlight for streaming PC games to living room via ethernet has produced amazing results (no lag, near same picture quality at 1440p/60fps). Really happy with it.

  • What is this for?

    • Make your TV a smart TV, netflix, apple tv, prime etc etc, runs Kodi really well. Stream games from PC to TV…. It kinda sucks that the android on it is crippled, it's really overpowered for something that won't let you install any "real apps". IE, can't install browsers or anything that isn't a game or streaming service…

      • You can install browsers and sideload apps that aren't in the app store. I do it on my 2015 Nvidia Shield TV.

      • Just sideload aptoide and you have basically every android app a download away

      • Also basically the only device you can play Dolby Atmos and DTS-X on properly from a hard drive. Has the best upscaling for any resolution below 4K too

  • This is a very tempting price, considering I could get around $150 (quick ebay check) for my 2017 Shield Pro. Has anyone upgraded and felt it was worth it from the older model?

    • +1

I sold mine $280 in October last year :)
