I got the last deal. Reasonably happy with the end result. Far from perfect, but worth $100 IMO.

    • How do these compare with Phillips Hue range?

      • +8

I have hue everywhere, but I've never tried the gradient light strip.

I do have a sync box in the media room, driving 5 play bars, and 2 lightstrips around floating sound panels on the ceiling. It's a fixed 140in screen flush against a wall, so the setup is quite different, hard to compare because it's apples v oranges.

Like for like, I would expect a better or more polished result with sync box and gradient strip vs govee. But it's also nearly 8x the price.

@abc12345: Since nightelves asked a question on the back of my comment, I was simply expanding on my experience with the sync box, explaining that my setup is not a like for like.

WTF have you added to the conversation?

Sync box is faster, better colour matches (IMO) govee is cheaper.

      • +1

the hue is a lot more expensive.

        Sync box alone is $342+

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/637596

Also HDMI content only, this Govee one will work on native TV OS since it's using the camera

        • Also from my experience the Phillips android hue app (if you want to do the Philips way cheaper!) won't work with protected display apps such as youtube, etc..

I bought the govee but as I have a Phillips Hue I never yet bothered installing it!

    • @MagicMikez32 How long did it take to get posted to you? I bought this a week ago and it still hasn't shipped

      • Exactly 1 month from order to received.

  • +1

I set up hyperion with a spare pi zero w and it's been working great. Use a wemos d1 mini for a wireless setup.

using SK6812 RGBW strips but you could also use more affordable ws2812b

    • What was the total cost of that setup?

      • +6

        it depends.

Got most of my stuff from BTF-lighting on aliexpress, arrives in about 2 weeks.

        5m BTF-lighting SK6812 strip ~$35
        BTF-lighting 5V 8A power supply ~$20
        pi zero w ~$15

With an android TV, you can use hyperion grabber, it won't work with Netflix though so I went with a HDMI capture card with loop out with a chromecast, alternatively, you could use a HDMI splitter.

ESH has a great video guide - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J26oYlKyq7Q

5m of strip should cover 75" tv as well

for a PC setup, it's even easier as you just need a WLED device (ESP8266 or similar) and no need for HDMI capture card or raspberry PI since you can run hyperion on the PC.

        • do you have to get a 4k hdr HDMI capture card for it to work properly?

          • @notewar: it will work with 1080P ones too,

main thing is passing through HDR if you watch HDR content,

and also one with a loop out

  • What's the average shipping price on this - can't really see easily

  • @doy about $25-$35 if priority

  • US voltage - needs local adapter?

    • most probably yes a traveler adapter should do the work, but can confirm once I get mine delivered

      • It's 100-240v adaptor - just need a converter (or buy your own 12v 2a adaptor)

    • Yes. Using a cheap $2 adaptor I got from ebay years ago with mine for months without issue which I was going to switch it for a DC plug I have laying around, but never bothered doing. It works fine.

  • Seems like distracting while watching TV

    • read lot of reviews before buying it which suggests initially it feels distracting but once you get used to it there is no going back haha…

      • +1

yep, a lot of the demos are crazy to show the effect but when watching a normal movie it helps with vision contrast

    • Useful when you watch free on air channels

purchased this 2 weeks ago for the same price, initial thoughts:

    • works fairly well but struggles with whites/some blacks on the tv (often shows the background as red)
    • camera should really have been more angled to capture the screen better
    • works on my 75" without too many issues (good rear coverage using the leds)
    • easy setup but does take some dialling in to get the best out of it.

id give it a 7.5/10 overall but a 9/10 for price.

here are some videos/pictures for you all https://photos.app.goo.gl/xH3giNocVWndrbFe6

    • do you need a voltage adapter or just a traveler is fine?

      • travel works a treat! :) its a 110-240 adapter

      • Basic adaptor works fine.

    • +1

also just to confirm, there is a bit of wow factor at first, but once you set brightness to about 50-60% as in my videos, immersion is fantastic without being distracting.

      • +2

thank you for the videos and pictures

        • no problem, i basically had the exact same questions as everyone else before i pulled the trigger and bought it :)

    • That's my biggest pet peeve - the red light on white/black backgrounds!

      • there is a yt video that talks about how you can address this somewhat using ND filters

        • Oooo, thanks I'll check it out

    • Nice thanks for the videos. Seems like a delay on quick changing images could be annoying.

      • +1

in my experience its not really noticeable, you stop focusing on the backlights and they just become a peripheral sensory piece, your focus still sits on the center of the screen so your eyes are much more accommodating to it

    • base on your pictures where did you place the camera?

      • +1

bottom near the sound bar, results were similar to having it at the bottom of the tv

    • +1

Where did you place the camera? Bottom of the TV?
Hopefully it'll work on an 85"

    • +1

That looks decent. Where do you have the camera? I couldn't see it in any of your video's or pics.

    • +1

Honestly, your vid sold it for me. That looks great

    • Hey mate, can i ask where is the camera located on your set-up, I cant seem to see it.

    • camera is actually on the entertainment unit guys, so its about 10cm further away from the tv than it usually would be (which works well for my 75)

  • +1

is the final price USD 95.50 (AUD 133.69) including shipping, after applying 10USD coupon ?

    • +1

Yeah that's what I'm seeing too

    • same here

    • AUD 133.69

    • what's the code?

      • please ignore, found it

        • Where'd you find it? I went to buy one and i'm getting the same $133.69

  • bought one, will see how it goes

  • I’ve got this from the last deal. I’ve got it on the back of a 75” x9000h( it’s stated max 65” so I knew I was going overs). The strips can go around no issues but the camera has a hard time looking at the bottom of the tv meaning colours near the bottom of the tv is harder to depict than colours at the top etc. but overall very happy with the lights and adds a layer of detail to my tv on the wall.

  • +1

Asking for a friend, if the screen mostly playing videos with beige/skin colour what sort of colour with the backlight show?

    I am guessing it's yellow?

    • +3

      Bow chika wow wow!

  • Late comment, but if anyone wants proper bias lighting, try the MediaLight Flex.

I got it based on a comment from another thread here, and it’s excellent. D6500 white, CRI>98.

Flashing coloured lights are a bit of a gimmick, they don’t do a good job of bias lighting.

    • +3

they don’t do a good job of bias lighting

They're not supposed to, they're a completely different product.

Ambilight exists to improve immersion, bias lighting exists to improve contrast.

  • For Home Assitant users, I found there is a Govee HACS integration.

  • Now $69.99 USD

  • They take their time to ship the product.

    • Yep, took 8 days before mine was even shipped.

  • Were these prices including shipping?

    • was $17 shipping for me
