I gotta say switch has held its price stupidly well

    • Yea, considering it's as powerful as a budget mobile phone from 4 years ago. I guess that's what happens when there is a monopoly hey. Nothing else out there like it.

    • -1

I've never seen it drop past $360 ever

      • Surely it will over the next 6-12 months, given steam deck + all the other manufacturers that will start pumping them out.

        • +5

You have no idea how deep the nintendo fan base is do you..

          They will pay for anything.

          • @SpeedRunnerLink: wait till you can just emulate everything on the steam deck

            • -1

@xazark: Once again you have no idea how deep the Nintendo fan base is.

they are willing to fork out big bucks for genuine copies and original hardware.

        • +3

steamdeck starts at US$400 for base model, which I fully expect to translate to $700+ by the time arbitrary Australia taxes added on.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Yes, and that's just the first version of the new portable gaming PCs. Imagine how many there will be, and as time goes on they will only get cheaper and cheaper.

It will only attract those that are after a mobile gaming platform, as specifically those that are Nintendo fans won't be swayed as much that's for sure. Nearly every third party library game and non Nintendo game will run better on the new portable PCs. That and the flexibility.

I wouldn't rely solely on the steam deck, but more what it will start. Surely they will eat into Nintendo sales, and they will have to actually compete

@onlinepred: i really want steam deck to gain traction, the only other thing that has been remotely similar is GPD win max or similar and that's easily over $1k even if getting it from overseas.

              • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Yep, I was almost ready to buy a Switch, but I don't like or play Nintendo games, and the performance of all the major third party titles was quite bad, so I held off. Now I just hope the new AMD chips make these mobile platforms so much cheaper than the GPD etc. Given they don't need to license windows for the new linux based AMD handhelds, that will save at least $120AUD off any of their prices, that and the CPU's are roughly half the price of the current ultrabook CPU's GPD etc use. So count me excited! I think we could see devices get as low as $600 for a fully fledged gaming handheld computer that you can run pretty much any game, from Nintendo to steam to windows etc. The real cool thing for me is the future of streaming, that Switch can't stream games from various platforms while the steam deck and handhelds alike will be able to utilise any game streaming services coming out. Going by the GPD win 3 prices, steam deck should be much closer to $600. GPD win 3 was $999 USD on release. The Aya was the closest to Steam Deck and it was $699 USD on release.

      • im almost fairly sure i got mine late 2018 circa $320 and thought it was a pretty damn average price…

      • I got mine during this years Prime Day deals for $348

      • I purchased mine for $334 during the 2019 Black Friday sales prior to Covid, but I doubt it will ever be that low anytime soon.

      • $315 prime day 2018

goes to show how overrated processing power is in a console

      • +1

theres no point in making the top spec system if you dont have the games to support it.

        • I'd argue and say that there's no point making games with top spec graphics if you don't have the hardware to support it.. There are many AAA games with good graphics that have been ported to the switch with downgraded graphics due to the processing limitations of the switch.

          • @puzzles2: That is also true, but at the end of the day the numbers dont lie and Nintendo have been selling big numbers.

            • @SpeedRunnerLink: Yep. Switch will be a top 3 best selling console of all time. Nintendo has struck gold three times now with runaway success. It's time for people to admit they aren't just lucky.

  • Both OOS

I can't persuade my kid (9 yrs old) to buy PS5. He really likes Nintendo. He likes pokemon. I have shown him there are lots of kids' games in PS5, but I failed. I can't afford 2 game consoles and never own a PS.

    • Buy a gaming PC to do some "word processing" in the office.

      • Also use to watch educational videos (mammals mating on the casting couch)

  • Hackable?

    • No it is not.

    Cheers.

Just grabbed a neon. Now off to cancel my oled preorder.

  • OOS now

If you want to play the games get yourself the Yuzu emulator on a PC and you will quickly understand how overpriced that ecosystem is.

  • Thanks! Just grabbed a grey one.. time to cancel pre-order!
