Help Me Find a Quality E-Bicycle for Daily Commuting

Hey everyone!

As the title already explains, I am currently on the search for an E-Bicycle to travel to/from work (16km round trip) and the odd errand running.

To give you some information, I have been looking at brands such as Kalkhoff, Cube, Orbea. Front suspension should be included and I would like to spend around 4k (less is even better! True saving fashion) but would be willing to go to 5k for the right bicycle.

I am 6'2 around 90kg located in South Australia and open to buying online, locally and second hand.

If anyone has any personal experiences with particular models/brands I'd love to hear!

  • I like the Focus e-bikes, also Merida e-mountain bike. I didn't end up buying but did heaps of research last year!

Shimano delivered a solid motor with their newer steps system. After watching a ton of reviews, I think they blind-sided the competition, which no doubt is catching up. This page at Shimano website lists all the brands using Steps.

  • Why do you need front suspension? Unless you are travelling rough trails it just adds weight and complexity.

    • Front suspension would be good as I would take it sometimes on trails for leisure purposes and I also find it's a much smoother/comfortable ride

      • I guess with your budget you should get decent suspension. If it’s cheap suspension it’s a waste.

    4k get a scooter

    • I was thinking this also (125 - 150cc) but don't know about which are good models

        • Cheers! The Arthur 3 would be the model I pick ultimately if I go down this route (although it costs a bit more than my budget)

    • Does it require motor bike licence and registration?

    • Honda dio or Suzuki address $3k new
      Nothing beats jap quality/reliability/price

I bought the Cube reaction pro 500 about a month ago and I'd recommend it. The buying process with 99 Bikes was easy and fair and availability good. I think it meets all your criteria. I'm riding around 80-100k/week and love it.

The seat is comfortable for a ride up to 50k without having to wear padded cycle shorts and the front suspension means you don't feel the potholes too badly. Some have suggested changing the tyres to a less nobby tyre can give an even smoother city ride, but I've just stuck wroth stock standard.

I compared a number of bikes and decided the Bosch motor was my preferred. I didn't like the Giant ebikes as their motor assistance felt laggy If you're so inclined there is a clip in chip for Bosch that lifts the speed limiting that would be an easy diy task (not sold by 99 bikes though!)

My significant other has a cube too, slightly older version. Mine has the sram rather than shimano, and I have found it to be smoother.

Good luck, ebikes are so much fun!

    • Bosch motor is also my preference too, I think they're superior to other ones.

Just had a look at the cube you have, looks awesome. A touch more like a trail e bicycle but as you said, swap the tyres out for a more commute feeling.

Could you link me the clip in chip though?!

  • The guys at https://dutchcargobike.com.au/ are awesome and will sort you out a great deal for your e-bike needs. They get the best stuff from Europe and round the world. Highly recommended!

Cheers for the link but not quite after a cargo bicycle or paying 7+ at the moment. The Riese & Müller Multicharger is their cheapest one I'd be after and costs a minimum of 7.5 haha!

      • i know, but amazing quality and after sales!
