M1 MacBook Air and DELL S2721Q Monitor - Colour Profile

I just got the new DELL S2721q monitor and notice that the colour output shown on the monitor menu setting is 'YPbPr'. When I set this to 'RGB', i get a purple tint which looks really off.

When you turn off the monitor and reconnect the HDMI cable, it will just turn back to 'YPbPr'.

Anyway, the colour looks 'okay' but its not as vibrant as I expect but I heard RGB should helps.

Given that many of this site have likely bought DELL s2721q and MBA M1, I'm hoping that someone can help me suggest how to get the colour setting to 'RGB' on the dell monitor?

  • What HDMI Mode are you in 2.0 or 1.4? Should be 2.0 by default. Also what HDMI adapter are you using? Some of the cheap ones can be a bit funky. Had one that didn't allow any streaming services to output HD content.

    • Thanks. Yes it should be 2.0 by default i did not adjust anything on that front.

The hdmi hub while its a budget one i did test it with Windows laptop and the monitor shows ‘RGB’ mode when connected so I think must be some interaction with MacOS but i dont know how to fix this ‘YPbPr’ issue. Anyway i also ordered another hdmi adapter from Anker to just make sure its not dongle related issue but I dont think it is.

      • You could also try the updating the monitors firmware and doing a factory reset on the monitor. There is also a diagnostic mode if you want to give that a go. Refer to page 69

I got the U3421WE delivered today and also wasn't impressed with the colours compared to my LG Ultrawide. I forgot I had night shift on so I turned it off and the colour still seemed off.

I had to increase the brightness to 80% and contrast to 77% to be able to get a pure white colour.

For my monitor if I change from RGB to YPbPr my screen turns purple not the other way around.

There is also a guide which addresses the purple issue:

        https://www.mathewinkson.com/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-o…

Note that the script in the guide messes with your OS and may introduce bugs and vulnerabilities. Use at your own risk. Not sure about M1 support.
