Recommendations for Turf, Zoysia Vs. Buffalo

Hi everyone,

Looking to returf about 75m2 of my backyard. The backyard had couch, and wasn't in great shape anyway (lots of weeds) and it wasn't levelled properly by the contractor when first installed. I did a DIY paving job, and spread some of that spoil in the backyard, which was the final nail in the coffin in encouraging the weeds to truly take over.

Initially I wanted to put Sir Grane Zoysia, but that would really stretch my budget. My main goal is to select a grass that is less susceptible to weeds. So thinking maybe Sir Walter or another type of Zoysia may do, especially since it's the backyard. Do ever so slightly prefer look/feel of a zoysia over buffalo, but not a big deal.

I have read through online comparisons, but keen to hear stories/advice from others. What did you end up going with, and are you happy with it? pros, cons?
Sir Grange is worth the premium in your opinion?

I live in South East Queensland, backyard exposed to the sun most of the day.

Thanks so much.

Sapphire Buffalo has a bit thinner leaves than Sir Walter if that's what you like about the look of the Zoysia. I don't have either but I'm looking to lay some turf in the next couple of months too.

    • Thank you, I didn't know about Saphire buffalo. Will check it out!

I have couch with the same problem as you, I'm about to replace it with couch, tiftuf specifically. Mainly because I need it to keep up with traffic from kids and the faster growth also helps it compete with weeds. If you're really adverse to couch I'd say go buffalo, I'm not sure the Zoysia grows fast enough to out compete weeds.

    • Thank you Lychees, your last sentence is my worry too, wether zoysia grows fast enough and dense enough to limit weed growth.

If you do get rid of the couch be sure to poison it completely before it gets remove, otherwise it will grow back from it's roots.

        • Thanks for the tip, I'll buy some more round-up this week! :)

i went sir walter, can recommend as a relatively low maintenance option that still looks okay even if you get lazy.

    • Thank you. Keen to find how often you mow in summer and winter?

Summer maybe once a fortnight. Winter prob once a month.

        • Thanks very much for the feedback!

I'm down south and when it gets warm/hot my Sir Walter goes ballistic and I have to mow it twice a week to keep it looking tidy, the upside to this is it does a good job of crowding invasive weeds out ( I also use pre-emergent twice a year). I would've preferred Sir Grange but one area is on the south side of the house and doesn't get any direct light in the cooler times of the year so went with Sir Walter. Another thing that may be of note for you is couch is hard to kill (down here anyway)… poisoned mine 7 times over 2 years before replacing top 10 cm of soil and laying the Sir Walter and its still popping up. I'm hand applying herbicide with a brush and it seems the Sir Walter vigour is helping me win this battle albeit slowly.

    • Thanks for the reply. I am finding that with the couch too, it's dying very slowly. The landscape is going remove and excavate, hopefully he will do a good job

    • doesn't get any direct light in the cooler times of the year so went with Sir Walter.

How does the sir Walter go with this?

      • really good, I just try and get it as healthy as possible before it goes dormant into autumn and it stays deep green throughout to spring, mind you when I say south I mean SA so not that cold really, don't know what mileage you'd get in parts of Vic or down in Tassie and most of the year except for maybe 6-8 weeks it at least gets some direct sunlight in the morning

        • Great, I'm in seq and have an area next to the fence that doesn't get very sunny, sounds like it would be perfect. Thanks for the info!

Walter buffalo for anywhere in and around d SEQ. Amazing stuff. Easy diy and hardy.

    • Thank you, great to know. How are you finding the mowing in summer? Pretty frequent?
