Lockdown Project Ideas

I've decided to undertake a big project of sorting somewhere around 50k photos and saved files from over the past maybe 10 years or so and have no clue where to start.. i've found some duplicate removal software that helped lighten the load a bit but would be happy to for any tips or recommendations or where I'd be best to ask.. i'd love to sort files by event or something simlar like that.. also if there's anyway to work out if files were taken by which model phone or camera too..

Essentially as a general forum query, any other lockdown projects anyone else has undertake similar?

  • Lightroom.

  • You can use EXIF tool to get all the EXIF data into a CSV. Then, you could use an analytical tool to do a whole bunch of fancy stuff to the files.

I did this in the first lockdown, and plotted my exposures over time, based on which camera was used, then animated the chart to show ~8 years worth of photography as a line graph.

You could also do things in a data driven way, like "what are the photos I took in each year's March,", or "What are the photos with a shutter speed longer / shorter than x"

    • What analytical tool you are referring to ? I am interested in doing something like this but lack information on where to start.

      • You can use Excel.

I used a piece of software called KNIME.

      • Lightroom does this with no effort needed.

  • Maybe upload to google photos and then sort from there? That way google will sort them all in time order and you just scroll through and sort the crap. Handy if you have pics in multiple folders on multiple drives

Once in Google photos you can search by person, date, etc etc

By person? Does it recognize faces?

Woop didn't reply to the original comment.

      Yes

    • +2

As above, yes. Then you select a name for that person

You can also setup albums with only select people to then slideshow on Nest hub, chromecast etc

Damn handy for growing kids, the Google algorithm is able to match them from young to older
