Best 4K Panel (TV)?

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations on the best value for a good quality (non-smart) TV. If it has built in smart features fine, but it is not a consideration as I'll be using a PS5 and Apple TV 4k.

I think these days OLED is the best? So I'd prefer that, I don't do much gaming and the gaming I do is more exploration and not FPS multiplayer so input lag isn't a big deal either. I'm just looking for a great panel preferably OLED for the best price, happy to be told about panels that have been a deal and should drop to a good price from a retailer too. I can wait a couple of weeks or a month for a great deal.

Cheers

  • LG make the best panels. Sony use LG panels. I doubt you’ll find a non smart version.

    • I don't mind if it has smart features. I'm just pointing out it isn't a priority, so I don't mind if the smart software isn't very good etc.

Any particular models you could recommend?

  • How big is your room? How far away are you seated? What are the lighting conditions when using the TV? What’s your budget?

    • Looking at 55' to 65'. Happy to pay more for a significantly better panel and picture, but could also be happy with a cheap one if the extra dollars are hitting diminishing returns.

Edit: Lighting is typical windowed room, not a home cinema with dark curtains.

      • How far away are you sitting?

If you’re watching a movie during the day will you close the curtains?

  • You’re kinda asking if you can get a new Rolls Royce without air conditioning. Pretty much any 2021 OLED (LG, Sony or Panasonic) will fit your bill.

    • Looks like no one is going to throw up a model number, so I'll just keep an eye on the front page for 2021 OLED from LG and Sony by the sounds of it.

Keep an eye out for a panaphonics or sorny oled, they are surprisingly cheap.

OLED and cheap don't go hand n hand, wait till the 65C1 are back on sale around $3k 👍

C1, but A80J with a better picture but worse input lag if you like the price

You get 0.01 better picture compared to Rtings hardly worth the absorbent price tag of a Sony

      • There’s more to it than this - stuff like upscaling and motion handling. I largely agree though, only worth it if found for a similar price and not fussed about the gaming benefits of the LGs

      • I didn't know about this site, thanks for the link. The stand on the Sony looks way better to me.

Try youtube for some comparison videos. Search for "LG C1 vs A80J". Lots of stuff!

I'm still a big fan of Hisense ULED, but worth noting… panel tech, regardless of the brand on the chase…

    ULED - Hisense Panel
    QLED - Samsung Panel
    OLED - LG Panel

"The battle between OLED and QLED is a story about branding, and it's also about a South Korean rivalry. Every single OLED panel found inside every single OLED TV is made by LG Displays, and every single QLED panel is made by Samsung. "

"Proprietary technology from Hisense, and only available from that manufacturer. ULED Refers to a system of hardware and software working together to control brightness, color, and more (but may also include quantum dots). Uses both hardware and software to optimize the picture. Hardware may have quantum dots."

The processing, tuning, and design of the controller are where some of the difference comes from. The generation of the panels also varies.
Go to a good store where it's quiet (once you are allowed out if in lockdown) and ask for the remote. Tune the panels yourself and compare them with YOUR EYES, not that of the salespersons. Good Guys are good for looking at panels, as they often have the screens in a darker area at the back of the store which is less likely to be affected by the lighting within the store like a JB or Harveys… This should be closer to the home environment when most will watch TV in the evening at home.

For the money and result - properly tested, people are generally hard-pressed to tell the difference between the different tech.
Similar discuss as a real 4k v 8k pictuer. You can wait and see what happens with QNED and OD Zero if you like…

    Hope this helps!
