Honda Super Cub - Station Bike?

Due to the rising property market, I've come to the realisation that I'll not be able to afford a decent sized property near walking distance to a train station anytime soon (I work in the city).

What's OzBargain's opinion on using a relatively cheap Honda Super Cub to use as a home-to-station mode of transport for someone that has never ridden a motorcycle before?

Will the bike be stolen/vandalised if left overnight at the station sometimes? I've never owned a motorcycle before so have no idea.

Most probably, also it depends on the location, me thinks

Why honda cub though? for around 6-7k you can get KTM duke 200 or even 390 for little more. They are such a fun bikes with a lot more power.

    • I didn't even think Cub's were around that price range!

I'll have to look at alternatives. I don't really want anything too flashy or powerful as it is going to sit in a public parking lot in the summer sun for 5 days a week.

      • Have you looked at something like a Honda Benly?

Grab a milk crate, strap it on the back and pretend you're a Melbourne hipster.

Maybe not the Super Cub so much, but something like a Grom or Monkey would probably be a pretty tempting target for thieves because they look cool.

Yeah what Mechanical said. The Cub has a world-wide following so it would be pretty expensive. What do you think of Honda Grom?

    • The only reason I thought of the Cub was because I watched an anime called "Super Cub" and the high school protagonist could ride a Cub without any experience haha.

There are cheaper new scooters out there.

In Sydney, you can buy the Torino Famosa 125cc for $3,090 ride away.

    • Is the Torino bigger than the Cub?

      Looks it from the photos.

My advice as a commuting and track day motorcycle enthusiast - is to not get into motorcycling unless you really have a passion for it. Riding any sort of scooter/motorcycle requires both huge commitment and skill in order to stay upright. IMO the risks - many of which are beyond your control (i.e. other road users), far outweigh the rewards/convenience in your situation.

  • Get something like a Fonzarelli Arthur 2 electric scooter. Easier to ride, less maintenance, easy to park, cheap to register. This is the best use for electric scooters. Short trips to just get to a train station would be ideal.

Don’t bother with the Arthur 1 or the Super Soco CUx as these bikes are way under powered and only do 45~50km/h. Would only buy on of them if you lived within 5km or so and it’s all 40~50km/h zones from home to the train station.

A push bike is another option if the roads are suitable (not too busy or hilly). Many times quicker than walking.

  • I was actually thinking about getting a second hand Super Cub or a second hand scooter in general. Not a new one.

I also thought about an early model Toyota Echo 3 door however parking is hard to come by in these commuter car parks when I catch the train at 9am.

My rule of thumb is 15min walk would be walking, 15-20min walk would be a push bike, anything longer of a walk would be a scooter.

    • The used market is pretty bad, limited stock and high prices mean getting a new bike isn't really a bad deal. In some cases it's the only way to get a specific bike. Depending on the distance you may be better off with a bicycle. Gear, fuel, servicing and registration add up.

Another scooter that is widely available new is the Suzuki Address 110cc scooter.

It is priced at $3,590 ride away.

It has a good reputation for reliability.

Suzuki dealers are also very common.

Electric bicycle, may do the job for you.

No rego, no licence, no petrol, servicing once year $$ etc

    • This would be great but I have a feeling that an electric bike would get stolen pretty quickly on a Friday overnight at a north west suburb station (eg. Schofields).

On those days I decide to drink after work and not be able to ride my bike back home.

Though maybe the electric bike is the way to go. If it gets stolen I'd just buy another one I guess. Maybe 5 stolen bikes would still come under the cost of owning a scooter.
