  • There's also a healthy 5 year warranty for domestic stand mixers. (vs 1yr for the larger 4.8L/6L Artisan commercial stand mixers)

I purchased the black one when they last had this sale.
Price is great but I would not recommend it.
The negatives: It is tiny( but really heavy). The bowls and beaters don't fit from other models.
The mixing on high seems to be medium equivalent on the Kenwood chef. The bowl is so tiny that it can barely mix a single cake mix.Too small for family cooking.Bowl is only 19cm across the top where it is the widest.
Whipping four egg whites takes ages and eventually fills the tiny bowl.
Most of the beaters discolour in the dishwasher so MUST be washed up by hand.
    Pluses -fair price.
The attachments all fit from any KitchenAid.
Compact(for those that have a lack of space and only want to make small recipes).

Thanks for posting this feedback. I was unsure about the mini in terms of what they advertise it can do versus what it can practically do. I'll hold out for the rare as hens teeth sales on a full artisan. I wish I jumped a few years ago when they used to heavily discount these things.

      • Yes I'm glad I jumped on the 2019 Black Friday deal from David Jones for $399 for Artisan model, with free ice cream bowl attachment. (Not that I've used attachment yet) Paid using CR and SB cashback from that year too. I love it.

    • This is really interesting as I have the same model but don't have any of the issues that you have about the size. Trues about the bowls and beaters but you can get them on special if you're lucky.

Depends on how much you use it I suppose but I've never had an issue with its sizer mixing cakes or egg whites going to stiff peaks

The Costco price is a bit high though; pretty sure I paid under $300 for mine about 3-4 years ago

      • I think for the most part, KA mixers are one of those items that have increased in price since Covid and for the rest of us who have been holding off on buying one, I'm not that hopeful that we'll see those prices from 2+ years back :(.

i have this, and i kind of agree. (do note i might be biased because i got this for $242 a few years ago, so i might be a bit more forgiving on the -ves than others who paid RRP.).

      just sharing my experience:
yes, the bowl is small, its a mini. but I can make a decent sized cake for a small family. I wouldn't be using it for a wedding cake. I have 3" x 8" pans and I can fill 2 of them easy in a sponge mix. or a single bread tin.

KA beaters are always handwashed regardless of size of the model. (even if it's coated)
i've used mixers from other brands that have stainless steel beaters, still rust and pit in the dishwasher.

the bowl is dishwasher friendly, i chucked mine in it .
there are additional accessories/attachments available for the mini, but it's not as great as the regular sized ones. last i checked, it's 2-4 for the mini, vs 10+.

the spiral (fruit/potato peeler that came free with mine) attachment works across different models.

      what i think are pros:
replacement bowls are cheap(er) than the other models. So you can get multiple bowls and split batter into different bowls. (I use a breville oven, so i am limited on space)
it's really heavy, but not bulky, so i can keep it somewhere else, and not dedicate a wasted space for the mixer.
there is a 'ramping' up of speed when you shift from 0-10, instead of shifting straight into 10 mode, i thought this was a feature not quite apparent in a lot of mixers in my limited experience.

i have done eggwhites for chiffon cakes (typically 7 egg whites) before and never had issues mentioned.

Thanks for the review! I was specifically looking for answers on chiffon cakes for this machine because I know egg whites tend to fluff up and take up a lot of space.

        • it really depends a lot on how frequently you are going to bake. I would suggest to go for a bigger bowl configuration if you are going to do it on a more frequent basis and have a bigger cake in mind.

glad my review helped but I just want to stress that my 'constraints' might not be yours. It would be a waste of money to 'upgrade' later. It might be a better option to go for the bigger model.

so probably do a bit more research :)

          • @slowmo: thanks @slowmo :)
I'm an infrequent baker and would probably make something once a fortnight, if that (need to watch that covid weight haha). I'm only looking at baking one standard cake at a time to share with the fam and that's about it. It seems like it can handle that fine, so I'm happy with that.

@cassiopeia: I bought a separate OEM mixing bowl for mine as well; just handy when you need two mixing bowls.

If you're willing to stand at the machine and hold the bowl (eg if you're just using it for mild slow beating / mixing), these bowls work on the base. They do not lock in so you need to just hold it in place. Cheapie solution for very light duties:

@Gunnar: Thanks for the suggestion! That's really handy to know :)

Think I must have gotten the same deal as you a few yrs ago at around $240 mark inc a free spiralizer (which was the reason that made me get it )
I have a kenwood normal sized and the mini KA is good for egg whites and small basic cakes. I did buy extra beater with scraper which normally comes free with the kenwood mixers but not KA ones.

I would probably recommend a normal sized mixer for this price though…
Sometimes when whipping up a batter, the batter comes up really high on the sides and I constantly have to keep scraping it down
I even have a spare sunbeam mixer with timer that I rate higher than KA mini and it only costed $250. I make lots of cakes and breads. I’d only use the KA mini for 3-6 eggs whisking otherwise I automatically use the kenwood or sunbeam standmixers

yeah, that was pretty much the selling point for me, at that time, because the other brands were well above the $240 mark and the other accessories are $$$ ontop.

unfortunately i don't have enough bench space to have multiple mixers, so the mini KA replaced the old one.

the mini is ideal for me, I tend not to bake huge amounts and i'm not a big cake fan, i got it primarily to do biscuits and mixing eggs for my regular cooking (which i go through a dozen of eggs each time).
i have machines for my other needs (bread+noodle maker) that does have some overlap. :D

        • @deal01 do you have the edge beater or just the standard beater it comes with? I'm just wondering whether the edge beater would make a difference when it comes to mixing the batter without the need to manually scrap it down. I know it's an extra cost (~$50) but unfortunately, I don't have much bench space so was looking at alternatives (like this) at the right price.

          • +1

@cassiopeia: I bought the additional beater with the scraper separately as that’s what I use for both my kenwood and sunbeam mixers. I rarely use the standard beater.
I find that it scrapes the bowl well but with the KA mini it still pushes batter up the sides esp if beating fast so I still have to somewhat scrape it manually down with spatula if that makes sense ?
It definitely is a space saver and good for smaller cakes and cookies and small batch of dough

  • Agreed. It's a useful "little" mixer for cakes/cooking but found the KitchenAid range of mixers to be too weak for stiff dough mixes for breads/noodles etc.

    • Which one do you think is good for mixing/kneading dough?

      • +1

Panasonic SD-2501 does a good job for dough.

        • -1

          +1 on this.
I have this. I use this for bread dough, it's so convenient. just dump stuff in and wait for the dough. Or if i just want bread, just wait a bit longer. :)

also have the philips pasta/noodle maker. paid back for themselves in entertainment value for kids and fresh egg noodles.

    • I'd like to knwo what you recomend for a tough dough mixes?

    • Agreed. I like this little mixer but not for dough with 400gm of flour. I can best 8 egg whites till stiff and if I do croissant dough with 400gms of flours, the whole machine rattles! I like it because its easy to store away and portable.

  • What would people recommend as an alternative to this?

    • +2

      Kenwood?

      • I have Kenwood Chef Classic. Very light and I fine KA mini is better to beat egg white.

    • Definitely the Kenwood chef, had mine over 20 years , big noisy , trustworthy, can leave it on for over 20minutes without it overheating or misbehaving.
Live in two houses , so this one lives in my main house. The little KitchenAid lives in the holiday house.

      • Thanks everyone. I was looking at the KW.
