3G USB Mobile Broadband Modem

Hi folks…

I'm a beginner with regards to mobile broadband and I'd appreciate your help finding a bargain 3G USB Modem.

I don't mind if it's locked to a specific network, as long as it can be unlocked by entering the IMEI number on one of those sites where you can get an unlock code. (I'll be using the Optus network for the moment though.)

My ISP is offering an Alcatel X220 for $43 inc. postage, with these specs:

GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS2100, UMTS900/2100, With Rx Diversity Version UMTS2100, UMTS900/2100, UMTS850/1900/2100, UMTS2100+AWS, HSUPA/HSDPA/WCDMA/EDGE/GPRS Max 7.2Mbps Downlink & 5.76Mbps Uplink

… So I'd probably need one with matching specs.

Can anyone help?

  • The problem with mobile broadband is that its 90% of the time its shit unless your on Telstra network. Of course telstra are the most expensive

    • Well i disagree(somewhat) yes MBB is a lot more variable than fixed broadband and the buying price is heaps higher per Gb etc BUT the convenience factor is just fantastic and depending on your location at the time
i have found both Optus and Vodafone work just fine(using optus mbb to send this post)

If you don't mind spending a bit more i prefer using the wifi modems (similar to the Vodafone Pocket WiFi)

      Cheers.

ps: i do have a telstra sim too as a backup (expensive) -but great in some parts of regional australia.
i have an android phone with a wifi hotspot which is great for this.

  • I probably would never have got it myself. But they're offering 500MB for free, as a kind of compensation for charging regional users $20 more than capital city dwellers.

    • Fair enough too
(note these modems from telstra, optus, vodafone etc come with a certain amount of "free" download too.

    • @realfamilyman,
you should also check the coverage maps on the optus web site (if you intend using them) to make sure you can get decent reception at your locality.

  • coles/woolworths regularly has optus-locked prepaid mobile data deals with modems for under $20. modem is probably slower though

    • +1

Modem speed capability ususally exceeds network speed so don't get hung up on it.
