Brake Light Not Flashing on Honda Accord 2009 Model

Back story, I recently towed a trailer and parked my car but the gear shifter got stuck in P mode. Anyway, I managed to figure out how to move the gear shifter but noticed the brake lights on my car (all 3) stopped flashing and horn stopped working. However, the tail lights (left and right) were working normally but won't flash when brake applied.

Please note that the tail lights are kind of multi-functional. I mean there is only one bulb which operates as a normal tail light and brake light.

So, I replaced the brake light switch but still no luck. Then, I replaced the brake light fuse and noticed the gear shifter was no longer stuck in P but only left brake light flashed when brake was applied.

Has anyone has a similar issue? How can I resolve this issue? I don't think I should pay hundreds to my mechanic to fix a minor issue.

Your trailer wiring is stuffed. You probably just have a globe out now.

    • Thats the problem. Tail light works as brake light. There is only one globe each side and its working but only one flashes when brake is pressed.

the single globs have 2 elements in them.. one of the elements must be dead

  • Does the vehicle also have a relay controlling these lights, usually found when you lift the bonnet?

    • Like a box with lots of fuses etc? Yes, I did replace the fuse and that is exactly when I was able to shift gear lever from P.

      • No, a box with a lot of relays in, small, squarish, often Black, things.

      • Could be 2 fuses; one for left and one for right. Are both headlights (low and high beam) working?

        • Yes, both headlight are perfectly working. They were not affected.

    What?

    LED lights on trailer?

    • No, on the car.

  • Checks fuses and relays.

Did you check the bulbs themselves? Brake light bulbs are dual filament, so 1 stays on all the time and the second bit lights up when you brake.

    • Accord 8th gen has only one bulb. I replaced it a few years ago thats how I know.

        One bulb, two filaments inside

        • Haha got it. I'll replace it the unit tonight

The brake lights on your car flash? I don't think I've ever seen flashing brake lights before.

    • doesn't it flash when brake is applied? yours stay on all the time?

If your brake lights are flashing i think you may have a problem.

If you mean steady, when you brake the lights are steady and turn off when pressure is no longer applied.

Well they don’t flash. They light up/activate when the brake is pressed.

They are not working if they don’t light up at all.

yours stay on all the time?

My brake lights turn on (and stay on) when I press the brake pedal and turn off when I release it. It shouldn't flash (like the indicators).

    1. Check fuses/relays
    2. Check bulb - make sure you replace all brake light bulbs with dual filament ones
    3. If above fails, try replacing the brake light switch which is fairly easy and cheap - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCNa3vEecJ4

    Best of luck
