Any suggestions (and bargains) for a 2FA hardware fob that works with Google (eg Adwords)? They're making it compulsory to log in with one soon and I don't expect to keep my current phone number forever.

Not a hardware fob, but I've been using Authy and would recommend it for 2FA.
Google authenticator app works fine for me. Doubt I'd want another fob to carry around.
if you are looking for hardware 2fa options, yubikey is good. Some of their products support nfc.
I grabbed a Yubikey from a deal listed here a couple of years ago. It has worked well, as it allowed access to my Google account, whilst overseas, without needing global roaming on my phone (I was using local sims).
Can you provide any evidence of needing a hardware key? Or did you just misinterpret the standard 2FA prompt somehow?
Sorry it doesn't need to be hw - that is my preference
I get a pop up on my phone that is linked to my google account/google authenticator.
No need for my actual phone number to be used.
I'm assuming this would be the same for adwords
