2029 eh… Not quite there yet.

  • +13

A few more months of WFH and lock down and we'll all be ghosts in our shells…

    • +1

      Nice metaphor, and pon…

  • From reviews, seems like Blu ray disc is region locked. 4k is fine.

    • +2

I think all 4K Blu-ray discs are region free but you're right about the included Blu-ray discs, you can't always guarantee they will work in our region.

    Gotta pay for shipping..no good

    • +13

Add something else from Amazon US/UK to cart to get you over the free shipping threshold, then immediately cancel the other item. You'll still get free shipping.

      • Omg why haven’t I thought about doing this. Genius.

        • Make sure it’s an item that says ‘out of stock’

          I do this all time

          • @Red Pandas: Works fine with in stock items too, there always seems to be a bit of processing time with any UK/US items whether they're in stock or not. I'll usually just add whatever other items have popped up in my search for the thing I'm buying, and always manage to immediately cancel them without an issue.

Did it twice this weekend without problems. :)

            • +1

@matictac: If you want to risk it then sure. But sometimes Amazon take a few days to dispatch, then you're sitting there hoping the item you didn't want doesn't get charged and shipped first

I play it safe and buy out of stock items, which I know aren't in stock for months .Then Amazon can take as long as they'd like, doesn't bother me

              • +1

@Red Pandas: Well I guess if you've had that issue before then good call, but I've never come across it. Is there a good way to easily find an out of stock item?

            • @matictac: They seriously never catch onto this? Seems like easy to detect abusers

              • +1

@jonnys1n: They do this trick used to work with Amazon au orders but word got around and patched.

                • @Lucretia: How did they patch it though? It's not like they can stop you from adding items and then cancelling those items?

                  • +2

@Smol Cat: they made it so you get a warning its part of a deal/promotion so if you do cancel a item the promotion is removed and are charged shipping.

                    • -1

@Lucretia: BOOO these corporate overlords. Can't give us peasants shit.

                • @Lucretia: wait…so it doesn't work anymore? Awww…

      • Than you're spending 49 dollars, it's no longer a deal then and your paying extra stuff you weren't originally going to buy

        • +5

I think you missed the "then immediately cancel the other item" part haha

      • +5

Probably shouldn't post this hack on a public forum.

Do it too often and Amazon might flag your account, and send you a please explain.

Some items get charged immediately, and cannot be cancelled.

        • Can't comment on my account getting flagged, but I've never had an item get charged immediately, and even if you were charged I'm sure it would just be a temporary hold.

Did this twice this weekend without issues.

      • Huh…why didn't I think of that?!

  • Can my PS5 play this?

    • +5

Yep should be fine for the 4K disc.

No Passengers end music, no buy. :(

  • Watched this on 4K just recently. Holds up! Great price.

  • +4

Great price. I have the same edition, totally worthwhile upgrade from the blu-ray. The best it's every looked. Paid more, regret nothing. Great movie.

  • I'm curious to watch it as an adult. Hated it as a teen.

  • +3

It's nice to get physical format, but a heads up that this is also $9.99 in 4K Dolby Vision on iTunes for those that are considering.

    • Do you know if there is any noticeable difference in quality between the 4k physical disc version and the iTunes release?

      • +2

It appears this UHD version is Dolby Vision as well. Between physical UHD and streamed video, a disc is always going to have more bandwidth and has the advantage of not being subject to the usual limitations of streaming (buffering; various impacts from other traffic on network and/or neighbourhood exchange).

I have a decent library of 4K content on iTunes and have watched a large volume of Dolby Vision content on Disney+, and a few offerings on Netflix, and they compare well to our small library of physical UHD's (mostly Pixar, David Attenborough docos and a few cherished classics like Blade Runner, Mad Max Fury Road etc). For animated films, I have routinely been impressed with how streamed Dolby Vision content looks on our 65" LG CX. The only issue we have is with occasional blocky crushed blacks in some scenes.

I would say that for a release like Ghost in the Shell, the differences between the disc and iTunes versions (both Dolby Vision) are going to be near-trivial unless you're really picking over the image with a fine tooth comb.

Since getting the LG CX, we haven't picked up any new UHD's given that we're satisfied with the quality of streams. For me, I would sooner get the iTunes release of Ghost in the Shell as I don't want a large physical format library anymore. Even films that come in a nice collector's case/steelbook aren't enough to get me to to buy the physical version.

        • All good until the Internet craps out in the middle of the movie.

That's when hard copies look really good.

      • There's a HUGE difference in quality between a physical blu-ray and a stream.

I think we've found the only person in existence that thinks this….

  • Is Akira released on 4k blu ray?

  • Experience it on VHS fist then move up.

Find apple seed and patlobor as well.

First time i saw it i taped it off the TV!

SBS used to play anime regularly in the 90s. Was the highlight of my weekend in high school.

      • +1

Those were the days. Plus no ads!

        • Those days really set the template for what I like now. Back when I had almost no responsibities to anything.

          Great times.

          • +1

@Sxio: Lived near an independent video store rental, owned by a Chinaman and he had a dedicated wall around 8m long 2 m tall rack of anime.

Great way to sink my teeth into the genre and really see the classics that I still love to see.

And yes sbs had a great library of anime too. Like some I thought I was never going to enjoy. Also sbs played some crazy anime to movie adaptations which had some crazy shit.

            • @Kiro: They really did. I only had a blockbuster but it too had an anime section. I checked out EVERY film they had.

I always felt Ghost in the Shell was a step above everything else though. Still one of my top 5. I watch it at least once a year but honestly, probably a little more.

My son likes it too. He had no choice to be honest, he's seen it so much!

  • Thanks OP. Grabbed it.

  • What the hell is a compact disc?!

  • Big question is whether this is the original release or the re-done colour grading?

There was a big debate over the color changes they made to try and make the original match Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence

  • It's not 2029 yet but we already have a "virus capable of infiltrating human hosts".
