Need a True 1.5v Rechargeable AA Battery

Can anyone recommend a decent true 1.5v rechargeable AA battery?

No, not a 1.2v Eneloop, I have a couple of devices that need 1.5v and don't work with 1.2v rechargeables.

Preferably either with a built-in USB port to charge them, or a cheap battery charger included.

I've a seen 4-pack with a charger for ~$39+delivery on Amazon.Au.

When I was searching for rechargeable 1.5v AA batteries I could never find anything much cheaper than $40 for 4. I ended up getting the brand "jugee" their on eBay and Aliexpress if your feeling brave.

  • The battery chemistry of nimh and nicad rechargeable batteries generates a lower voltage than alkaline or lead zinc disposables, so I don’t think you will easily find this.
There may be some specially manufactured packs to get around this, presumably this is how the one you linked works, but I don’t think you will get them inexpensively.

Rechargeable alkalines are pretty uncommon since they have limited use cases and very specific recharge characteristics. They are not usually the best choice for most applications unless specifically designed in that way.

OP: What is the application / device?

Also, I wouldn't be trusting Jaycar floor staff too much. Yes, some know their stuff, including when to honestly say "I don't know," but if you don't know then you won't know who you're dealing with. Some of the stuff I've heard these people tell enquirers in the store have made me cringe; at least once I interrupted a conversation to save the poor potential customer from being completely misled and spending big or potentially causing damage.

      • OP: What is the application / device?

Wireless doorbell - has terrible range with rechargeables. Decent with true 1.5v.
Cordless hair trimmer - motor runs slow with rechargeables, good with 1.5v.
Motion sensing night light - only picks up movement at 1m with rechargeables, 5m with 1.5v.

        • Seems to me the one you picked is suitable. Just go with it.

    Interesting question

I think the limiting factor is the size
I am sure they can make a 1.5v rechargeable battery now

But 10 years ago I presume the rechargeable battery would need to be bigger that an alkaline battery to have the same voltage
Therefore it would not be the size of a AA battery

They might be able to make a 1.5 rechargeable now with the latest technology but we are conditioned to using 1.2v

Maybe it is a conspiracy and manufacturers don’t want to make them as they might be lower profit than the current batteries

    • They already make them. I linked to one in my original post. They are basically size reduced 16850s (3.7v L-Ion) batteries with built-in voltage convertors to 1.5v.

I'm just looking for some feedback one decent brands. So far, the ones I linked to in the OP @ <$10/battery inc charger, seems like the best option I've found so far.

  • If you wanted to go DIY, you could get a buck/boost converter to dial in the output voltage to what you want, depending on how many AA batteries are in series.

    • They need to fit in a standard AA battery holder. I'm not planning on building my own electric car. ;-D

Here's a review for the product linked in the OP.

  • This also seems to have good reviews.

  • how is it possible to undervolt a lithium battery to produce 1.5v?

  • I have purchased both Jugee and HUAHUI

I have found the Jugee ones work very well and run them in my Lego Technic builds.

  • You can try 1.5V lithium li-ion rechargeable battery, similar to

I bought mine from Taobao China brand Doublepow for 2 years now and no problem. You can try if you can navigate Taobao website.

  • Don't nimh battery chargers charge to 1.45 or 1.5 v? But nominal use or, when it's depleted is 1.2v?

  • Hi all, just a question. Can I use my regular charger that I use for eneloop/turnigy batteries to charge these or do you need a special charger?

And for anyone interested. Hobby King has these - 1.6V but comments say they are using them as regular 1.5V.

Edit: need a special charger for the Hobby King batteries but they are only $2.76.

Edit: actually - can use a Ni-CD/Ni-MH charger from what I'm reading

There are a bunch of AA sized lithium batteries with electronics so that they output 1.5V, rather than down to the 1.2V of Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, or the 3.7V of normal lithium ion cells.
