Kids Activities Online

Greetings, can you please share sites (free and paid) that you've used in the past to keep your kids occupied during lockdown.

I'm looking at something similar to this - https://www.kidsatartnyc.com/online-art-classes-kids-nyc/

Ideally I prefer it to be interactive over a zoom or some other platform, I understand you would be hard pressed to find anything free so just wondering what paid ones are good value.

I've a 10 year old who is starting to become a Minecraft addict so trying to steer his attention to something else during the lockdown. I do take him out for other physical activities but it is not enough I feel. Appreciate your tips and help.

personally, i prefer to get my kid OFF screens during lockdown.

    • thanks, agreed but during lockdowns that is a challenge while they are stuck at home with no friends.

its not about being stuck at home.. kid can draw, lego, puzzles, go out for walks/ride a bike/play soccer/basketball, read an actual book.. they don't have to constantly watch screens

Art and crafts - painting, learning to knit or crochet, etc
        Building cubbies with sheets etc
Card and board games with siblings
Bike rides and walks - one of my favourite activities as a kid was going on bike rides with my sisters and just going to random locations, getting halfway across town thoroughly lost and finding a pay phone to reverse charge mum and get her to come find us and pick us up
        Reading books
        Cooking
        Making videos / writing music
        Practicing musical instrument
        Writing stories and illustrating them
        Building Lego

Lots of things to do at home that don't involve video games or passively absorbing content from screens

Does no-one have imaginary friends these days?

parents would probably put them on medication nowadays

I think it's not that people don't have imaginary friends, it's that people don't have as much imagination as before.

Though if OP's child is playing Minecraft than they have some degree imagination, as Minecraft can be really boring for someone with no imagination. But yeah, like supasaiyan said, they would put the child on medications if they reported they have imaginary friends :(

This is very true! I've just started playing and Ive zero interest lol I'm only doing it like you said to bond better. Gameplay interests me but it takes ages and requires lot of patience which I dont have. I prefer outdoor activities. Thanks for the tip though.

  • If they love Minecraft, I highly recommend getting them a few of those bigger LEGO sets. It might set you back more than $1000, but they are going to love it and LEGOs last forever so if you ever have more children, they can enjoy it too.

Also, have you tried to play Minecraft together with them? One of my fondest childhood memories is playing games together with my dad and mom, I think it would really help to bond together.
