What to Look for in an Air Purifier?

Bargain hunters,

I'm spending more time at home as WFH, so it's time to invest in an air purifier.

What features are a must?
What brand/model do you own? How much did you spend on it?
What features do you love/wish you had?
Any brands/models to avoid?
Anything else I should know?

  • I recently just purchased, for me main thing was
    - HEPA filter (some might use EVA which isn't as effective)
    - CADR (higher the better)
    - Filter availability and cost
    - Floor area coverage

I decided to go with xiaomi 2c ($119 from pc market, from specs I think it performs similar to 3H but just doesn't have app integration or screen)

    • Thanks, HEPA filter was also on my list.

  • I went for the Samsung one. Two filters but one is washable.

    • Which model?

      • All their current models have 3 filters (my bad)…
        pre filter (washable)
        carbon filter
        HEPA filter

I've had mine for a few months in a dusty environment. I've cleaned (washed or air compressor) the pre filter a few times. Haven't had to change the replaceable filters yet.

  • Xiaomi working well for me

    I have the Xiaomi 3H.

My list of criteria was pretty much as per Wiz3000's post above. One thing to note is that whilst a higher CADR is a good thing especially for larger rooms, it requires you to turn the power all the way up, which will increase its noise level (these things are basically fans moving air through a filter).

I noticed Ikea also sells an air purifier these days. Specs aren't as good as the Xiaomi, but it's also cheaper at $89.

    • How much are the air purifiers for the 3H?

  • Is there any issues with Xiaomi 3H? I'm planning to get one as well.

    • The sensor can malfunction on the 3h

The air quality sensor is made for chiness air and will only go up from 0 if youre cooking or have a smoke in the air then it will go from 0 to 100 but the feature is useless apart from that.

    • No issues so far. The initial set up on the app was a little clunky, but once set up it's fairly intuitive to use. Quiet on low to medium settings, but gets pretty loud on its highest setting.

The following features are a must.
caster wheels, handles for easy mobility, remote controls, multiple fan speeds, and filter change indicators.

  • Check replacement filter costs before you buy any brand. I have a Philips 2000 series. Replacing the two filters cost $120 and no one discounts them.
Choice recently tested air purifiers. The top performer was a Samsung with a RRP of $999.

    • Ahh thanks for the tip… I was hoping to find a washable/reusable filter… will do more research.

      • The Philips 2000 series has 3 filters, only one is washable. The charcoal and HEPA filters must be replaced.

    • Cant review the review, can you please screenshot the review for Xiaomi Air Purifier 3H?

      Thanks.

  • late to party but looking at the breville smart connect one right now.
DJ has it for $299 and comes with a free replacement filter.

which one did you end up going with OP?

    • My dad bought me one from Dyson :D

      • Oh dear. Dyson models were amongst the worst performers in the Choice test. :(

        • Oh well… they do have the best aesthetics
