  • This device is doing the same as pushing the accelerator harder. But for 183AUD…

It doesn't add any power but it will help you access that power more quickly.

I know in my 4x4 the accelerator feels spongy and slow to react - this made it feel like a different car even without more power. A more efficient way of achieving the same result if you would.

Not sure why you're getting negged - that's exactly what these things do.

I tried one of the idrive units (very similar to this deal) hoping that it would eliminate or at least reduce the awful throttle delay on a Hilux, but all it does is make the throttle open more with less pedal.

I can do that with my right foot so I returned it.

You're very close; it's worth putting your oscilloscope on your throttle wiring and checking 1st hand.
What they change is actually the shape of the throttle curve; since there's almost no modern car in existance that has a linear 1:1 e-throttle curve

So basically; if they're designedfor your car specifcally, they can (technically, as you say) make the throttle open sooner 'more', but the boxes correction ALSO isn't linear; so between the throttle curve, and the boxes 'correction', they can make your throttle linear.

With that said, at $180+, most cars can be dealer-reflashed to have the ethrottle behave in a 1:1 relationship with pedal position.
So it's worth asking your dealer if they can 'fix that' at the next service, rather than dumping money on electronic doodads which intercept one of your critical inputs.

I have simething silimar in my Amarok.
Agree with above post, will not give you any extra power but it means you don't have to put your foot through the floor when you need to take off fast. I only really use mine when I am towing our boat.

  • I mostly use mine in economy mode and can get under 5 litre per 100 doing 110 kmph.

  • Thanks but I think I'd rather pay a bit more and get the iDrive @$199 https://www.autopartsco.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=idrive

Be sure to ask your dealership first.

They should be able to flash your ethrottle to whatever curve you like, for 1 hours labour; which is usually $88.

Not all car brands provide the dealers those tools; but a vast majority do (ford dealers have forscan; for example)

      • I wasnt aware this was a possibility from the dealer, but I kind of like the option of being able to adjust the throttle response as needed. As I drive a 4x4, my requirements around the city are different to off road tracks.

        • Lots of people arent comfortable with a box modifying their throttle is all.

If you drive a manual, you have a failsafe (pop it out of gear); but for people who drive an auto, having something send errored throttle data is a big risk.

You might remember the mk5 diesel golfs that ran away. Being diesel their engines overpowered their brakes, and being auto 'turning off the car' in a runaway diesel meant it just saw errors and wouldnt restart anymore.

Throttle and steering are things I like to be in control of.
