I need advice constructing a 3.1 surround sound system

I had been looking at soundbars to level up my home hifi setup and have had an epiphany that i should instead be focussing my attention on a proper hifi system. I have a record player as well that i will connect up to the hifi system as well as the TV.

Due to the entertainment unit i have, i need a slimline receiver. I am looking at the Marantz NR1711 (atmos compatible) and the yamaha-rx-s602 (no atmos).

I am more looking for advice on side speakers, a sub and also a centre channel speaker. Ideally all of the speakers will cost less than $750 total. I dont know where to start!

Unfortunately i do not have space in my living area for rear speakers.

Thank you in advance!

      This,
Bought brand new 10 years ago only to realise the second hand market for hi-fi is incredible value. Not a huge demand for passive speakers given the emergence of soundbars. Nothing beats a good hifi system.

Although if you did want new i believe Klipsch do decent entry-mid level speakers - albeit a bit 'bright'

  • What is your turntable and what is it currently connected to?

    • It’s a pioneer PL990 turntable, connected via an adapter and aux to a normal speaker - very basic setup.

      • All good. That turntable has a built in pre-amp so you'll be able to connect directly from turntable to any receiver. In my old setup I also used an adaptor 2-1 which I'm guessing is what you are referring to.

        • Yeah sounds like we are on the same page. Not sure why i didn't think of this earlier!

          • @bman20: I've also got a 3.1 setup which are all Q Acoustics. 3010 speakers, 3090ci centre and QB12 sub.

I'll be upgrading the speakers in a year or two but they sound amazing. I also have my turntable connected to a Yamaha RXV4A though this would be too chunky for what you're looking at.

I had the Pioneer PL707 turntable when they first came out as a mate of mines misses was working for them and I got one at a grouse price too
I got my Polk S60's from Selbys. I get all my cables from them too. Ring them up & ask for advice if you like as well. https://www.selby.com.au/
