July Security Update for Note9 Seems to Fix Screen Problem

My note9 had a screen problem where it has lines through it and colour goes funny. If I power turn the screen off repeatedly, it reverts to normal.

After the latest security update, the screen problem no longer happens (2 days in)
If someone also have the problem, please try the latest update and see if it fixes your screen problem too.

    OK

  • Very odd. The product you 'had' sounds like a hardware issue with the LCD panel.
I'd be very surprised that a firmware update would fix this.

But… without seeing the problem (even via video) I'll take your word for it.
I didn't see any reference within the update notes from Samsung that referenced the screen to rectify any issues.

    • *Very odd. The "problem" you had…

    • There was probably a bug in the old GPU firmware which caused the line issue such as "Address Line" bugs. Had an incident on my old S7 Edge where an update caused lines on the screen. I've also experienced lines on my Alexa Show which was fixed via auto update.

      • Your reply is a better description of a possible FW issue - yes. However, from the OP's description, it sounds more like a hardware fault where there is an issue with the connector or LCD panel layer itself (or the likes). The OP noted 'security update' not FW and power cycling the screen is usually a hardware related matter.

Maybe something was included and not needed or noted in the release notes for the variation received on my N9.

I understand what you have described as a likely CM or GPU issue as you have mentioned.

Either way, hopefully, both handsets are fixed and working well. The OP doesn't seem to have been back to provide an update. Saves spending coin on a new device for them.

        • Yeah, these things are tricky to tell whether it's HW or FW related as power cycle also resets the registry. Security update can also some time provide patches to vulnerable chips and address bugs along the way.

  • Correlation does not imply causation, is evident on this one.
