Advice Needed on Sink Mixer

I purchased new sink mixer from Bunnings just 1.5 years ago and it has started leaking.

Bunnings is offering refund of product but not labour. They are saying labour is only covered for 1 year. I would have to make another plumbing payment to install new mixer and Bunnings won't refund labour for previous plumbing invoice. Am I being unreasonable to push for labour cost refund?

Also what mixer would you suggest to install? I want something which is reasonable priced with good warranty and will last.

Thanks in advance!

If it’s leaking, just change the mixer cartridge?

    • ^ this .. most leaking for a mixer is fixed with changing the catridge in it … leaking is generally a sign the cartridge needs changing.

Why would they refund labour? There is clearly nothing wrong with the worksmanship if the mixer worked for 1.5 years unless you can prove that the leaks were caused by poor installation?

I am more surprised your mixer worked that long seeing the horrendous reviews.

    • Fair enough.

      Any recommendation for good mixer?

      How are the IKEA mixers?

    Yes.

    • Ok fair enough

  • No way they are paying labour. The only way I could see you getting labour paid in a mixer install, is if the plumber supplied the mixer.

Just replace it yourself, takes about 10 minutes and isn't rocket surgery. Actually before you do that, check that the hoses into the mixer are actually tight. The idiots that did the plumbing when my house was built didn't tighten anything properly, had plenty of easily fixed leaks.

  • Watch some youtube on how to diy it, its not hard to replace the mixer. Also buy a better unit, dont cheap on low cost mixer. Something you will use everyday, charity begins at home.

I've installed methven and oliveri mixers. Range between 200 - 300. Furniture store for mixers i.e ikea is not recommended.

Claimed warranty from methven and oliveri, I find methven after sales service is better.

    • Just to put it out there, I have a 10 year old IKEA kitchen mixer. Still as good as the day I bought it. I haven't even had to replace any cartridge on it yet. I suppose it could be a YMMV issue.

OTOH, at my parent's house, the Price Pfister mixer failed after 14 years. I have no idea how much it was but I remember my father complaining at how pricey it was.

  • It's easy to swap a mixer over. You tube is your friend if you do not think you can do it. Just make sure the water cocks under the sink are turned off before you start and make sure you have some old towels handy as the tap and hoses will have water in them when you finally disconnect them.

Recently did the same - replaced kitchen sink mixer.
Didn't really care to risk Bunnings gear so I rocked up to my local plumbing joint. I think its part of the Tradelink chain. Nice kitchen mixer was around the $160 mark - can't recall exact price. Plenty there with pull-out fancy faucets were around the $400. Yeah no thanks.

And like @AndyC1 says, youtube is your friend. He also says to grab some old towels - yep, do that too.
The hardest bit was performing the contortionist gymnastics to reach around the back of the basin.

    • +1 for the difficulty being the 'contortionist gymnastics required to reach around the back of the basin' comment

  • Bought one for kitchen and one for bathroom from Amazon. Self installed - is not that hard. Just make sure you have the right tools. Saw fancy ones in Costco but I'm quiet happy with $50-$70 ones from Amazing n.

  • These use flexible hoses. Super simple to replace the tap yourself.
