Apple Homepod Mini or Echo Dot or Any Speaker as TV Speaker?

Hi Legends,

I'm after a device as a small remote speaker for my TV. I have Google Nest mini but there is a huge sound latency when Google Nest connected to my Andoird TV with Bluetooth. Although I have Andoird TV but I'm going to switch to Apple TV, so the remote speaker will be working with Apple TV. I think homepod can get rid of the latency problem but it's expensive and has fair sounds quality. For Echo dot and Bluetooth soundbar, there might still be latency problems as they are still using Bluetooth and not part of the Apple echo system. Any suggestions?

Cheers.

  • Not exactly what you’re asking but, for what it’s worth, I use a single Sonos One as my sound system for the Apple TV 4K. Audio is played via Airplay 2 and there’s no noticeable lag.

I would imagine audio played through a HomePod mini would not be an issue.

    • Thanks for the advice, Sonos One is a really good option, just a bit expensive, is there any chapter options that similar to Sonos One?

      • Sonos One SL (the one without the microphone) will be slightly cheaper. Although, not by much.

  • I wouldn't hold your breath, now in fairness it was 6 months ago when I last tested but it was a disaster.
The audio is in sync with the video, that's not the issue.
I was using an ATV running Plex and a HomePod for the audio. There was a 2sec lag on starting, stopping and FF/RW video. That made the 10sec skip function unusable.
It was painful and I switched back to my normal speakers after 30min of bashing my head against it.
Maybe things are better now. I think the issue was due to the lag from airplay buffering.
I believe that airplay 2 should fix it but I couldn't see any options to adjust.
    Good luck!

  • If your primary purpose is to upgrade your TV audio, then take the $300 and buy some brand name 2.1ch soundbar with subwoofer and call it a day. For movies (and likely music) you'll get a much better experience.

And it doesn't matter if you use Google or Apple TV.

    • Hi, my primary purpose is to find a tv speaker to put near my ear because I have some hearing problem :(

      • Why not use any bluetooth headset with the Apple TV then?

        • because I need to share the tv with others in the house :) If I use headset only one person can hear it

          • @AussieBogan: Fair enough, but having speakers near ears and not at TV isn’t a nice experience for others too. What about combining sound bar for the other people with a headset for you. It can be done.

  • The Mini will work with the Apple TV, and I believe an update is coming soon to make it a default speaker if you desire. Airplay 2 adjusts the source so their shouldn’t be any lag at all. So if you are going to use a wireless speaker this is the best method. As mentioned a Sonos One, or Sl will work. Sonos also make a Roam which I believe also has Airplay, but any speaker with Airplay 2 support should offer lag free audio.

  • I am not familiar with apple tv, but for tv, I use Taotronics aptx Rx/tx and Avantree torpedo plus to listen to shows without latency.

  • I use HomePod with my TV it works great!

  • Latest Apple TV (2021 model) supports ARC. If your tv is compatible you can play all audio to Homepods (Homepods mini in next tvOS). That includes any other devices you have connected.
