I'm planning to get a Optiplex 9020 (Intel Core i5 4690 or similar) for Pfsense. I have seen them around in few deals here and has anyone here managed to calculate their power consumption under standard load in kW?

Wow that's not bad , I'm currently testing it on a AMD Phenom(tm) 8450 Triple-Core old box at 78W, only got a SSD and a extra network card.
If you are acquiring hardware to use and concerned about power consumption - would you be better off to buy something that uses less power
Link to minimum requirements
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/hardware/minimum-…An old laptop would use much less power than an old desktop
Probably one floating around with a broken screen on ebay/gumtree etc.Alternative a 2nd hand NAS
What about a raspberry pi or similar - I didn't check but for a firewall alone I would think it would run it
GLRaspberry Pi 4 + USB3-to-Ethernet dongle + OpenWrt = low power router. However I agree that an old laptop lying around can be easily turned into a router (assuming gbit ethernet port + an USB3 port).
I have tried the pi4, slightly struggling in power. I don't have any old laptops laying around.
So my current options are:
Low profile old dell or hp (around 30W)
or

I'm using an old HP sff, i3 2120 with pfsense and it runs at about 25w
If it helps your calculations, my HP EliteDesk with the same CPU and 1 x external HDD I use for dlna streaming reads 39W of load from my UPS
