Repairing Walls - What Should I Be Using?

Repairing Walls - What Should I Be Using?

Hi all!

My partner and I have recently purchased our first house and are in the process of stripping out the wardrobes ready to put in some nicer floors on top of the hardwood.

The skirting around the walls is old and falling off, and we are deciding should we remove it and just patch up those sections of the wall that will sit behind built-in wardrobes.

  1. Is it worth patching these sections up or should i replace the skirting?
  2. What material would I use? Gyprock?
  3. There is some gaps between where the wall meets the hardwood, how should i fill these up?

Some other notes
- House is double brick
- We are quite new to this but we are reasonably handy
- Looking for a good repair over a cheap repair

Thanks in advance

If you can find skirting tall enough to cover where the other on was, I'd consider doing that. It's cheap enough and is going to look way better. If you try to match it, you're going to have to fill in the joins between.

Similar skirting, just cut to size of break.

    No more gaps.

The skirting is there to protect the wall and also conceal the wall/floor join to make it easier to construct.

If you want to put new flooring on top of the existing, you probably want to rip out all the skirting so your new flooring sits under the skirting to hide the edge. If you do that, get new skirting the same height and it will sit higher up the wall and conceal any damage.

If you are new to renovation and want a good job it may be worth getting a flooring installer to install new skirting. Skirting can be a DIY, but older houses can add complexity if the floors/walls aren’t straight/square. DIY the skirting removal though.

  • "on top of the hardwood"

    Must…..not…..scream.

    1. I'd replace the skirting.

    2. Similar timber will match better.

    3. I have no idea on that one.

  • some nicer floors on top of the hardwood.

    Sorry?
