Toshiba Satellite Laptop Keyboard Won't Work

Hey guys

I have an old school Toshiba r540.

Apart from a few numbers up the top, when I type on the keyboard nothing happens.

I'm wondering if I may have activated some type of keyboard lock accidentally.

Thoughts?

Cheers

  • Just to clarify we’re talking about a 10+ year old laptop here?

Think you activated the ‘get a new laptop’ switch.

  • There's no keyboard lock that disables the use of certain keys on a laptop, meaning you most likely have a hardware issue as opposed to a SW one.

Your keyboard is probably broken and might need a replacement, or it could just be corrosion (as is the case with old electronics) and you might need to clean the metal contacts (keyboard connector) with some isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip.

To do any of the above though you'll need to disassemble the laptop. Depending on the model and if there are service manuals floating around on the internet the task can either be fairly trivial or moderately difficult.

  • Thoughts?

    Time to replace it.

Tried plugging in external keyboard to see if it works?

    • Yeah mate, external works.

      Agree about updating too lol

Keyboard not detected. Press F2 to continue.

  • The cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard is probably frayed or damaged in some way. Happens to older notebooks.

  • So what are you typing on right now?

    1. Test via external. If it works then youtube the model and find a breakdown video.
    2. U may find the keyboard can be removed without pulling the system apart. Many laptops have a series of tabs at the top of the keyboard which u can carefully flick back and remove.
    3. Once removed (however the device is pulled apart) google the part number for a replacement.
      Hope this helps.

You could probably buy a replacement keyboard on Ebay if you can work out the part number of the keyboard. It's usually relatively straightforward to replace

  • Just keep using external, maybe BT

  • You will need to buy a replacement keyboard form Ebay. There are tutorials on YouTube on how to replace it. Just keep in mind that those generic keyboards from Ebay will work perfectly but quality of keys (for eg: stability) will not be the same as original.
