iPad for Student Use

Interested in getting an iPad for school use (year 12 next year) . Just have a couple questions:

  • Is it worth it?
  • Which model should i get?
  • What's the lowest price point I can get it at and when?

Thanks OzBargainers

Your entry level iPad with WiFi is probably your starting point and you can buy at Edu pricing.
https://www.apple.com/au-hed/shop through Apple or sometimes through the school.

Ask your school for what they recommend…

  • Is it for year 4 or 11?

Get one with pen support and you can try doing the practice exam papers on the iPad instead of printing literally hundreds of pages of practice exams and lugging that around. Would take a while to get used to though. Maybe try the iPad or the iPad air.

  • Ask the school which device they recommend, at ours the iPads are only for Primary and (touch) Windows Notebooks for Secondary. iPad multitasking is more difficult and you'd definitely want a keyboard for it.

Do you have access to a computer that you can use? I use my ipad for uni, it's great for notetaking during lectures and writing on, however when assignment time comes around, I fire up my PC with dual monitors with a solid 50+ inches of screen realestate. It's great as a complementary device but I wouldn't rely solely on it as my main computer.

As much as Apple markets it as the next replacement to your computer, it's really not. It is however great in what it does. I love just sitting on my couch and doing readings (uni readings, manga, comics and articles), going through lecture content, making basic notes, streaming content.

For the final verdict, if you've already got a computer, I think it's a great complementary device, I'd get the air or maybe even the pro (I got the pro because (profanity) Apples storage options). If you don't have a reliable computer, go with either Mac mini/macbook air and down the track get an entry level ipad if it still appeals to you, or go for the pro if you've got the money.

As for when and where to buy it, the pros regularly go on sale on ozbargain through ebay deals and what not, and the extra cost vs the air makes it much more appealing at that price point, as for the regular ipad, I think the education store is your best bet, the price doesn't seem to change much on the entry model, there aren't too many sales on them.

    • thanks for your help!! so if im deciding between air and pro i should go for the pro?

      • If you're going to go that far I would just get the new Macbook Air. Literally have to charge it once every 3 to 5 days. Will last you for years, the M1 chip beats every other laptop and for that matter most desktops. You really can't go wrong.

      • If you think 64gb is enough the air is good value, but that's not enough for me. When you upgrade the storage the pro makes more sense as you get several features for $100 (120hz screen, face ID unlock, m1, better cameras).

Like the other guy said, the macbook air is also a good buy if that's what you need but I'd go for the ipad pro if I was weighing my options between the pro and air.
