Kid's Gaming Keyboard and Mouse

My 11 and 10 year old kids are after a gaming keyboard and mouse each, prefer wired so there isn't a dongle for them to lose (again!) and backlights of some sort would be nice for them.

I'm looking to spend less rather than more (neither of them are exactly gaming champions) and saw these at EB Games, so a budget of under $80 for a Keyboard and Mouse combo would be ideal. Are any of these decent? Are there better options out there?

Are the Kmart sets complete rubbish?

There is a review of the $39 Mech. keyboard
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shk-7GEdkeM

So it's not bad. Just unremarkable, hollow sounding and kind of plasticky, but that's generally what you get for $39 anywhere. It'll be a good idea to keep the receipt in case you need to make a return.

The Logitech G300s is probably the cheapest gaming mouse I can recommend. $28 delivered with eBay Plus or $29 delivered @ Amazon with Prime.

Are the Kmart sets complete rubbish?

Doesn't matter, as it will be destroyed without mercy by your kids. Better buy them something cheap that you won't feel bad when it gets trashed, specially if they are that young.

I would buy Kmart as it is guaranteed to be cheap and still of good quality (for the price!)

    $59

    $79

For kids, these look real cool.
Not sure on quality but Officeworks returns are pretty good from what I've heard.

  • Why would you need RGB etc? Just get good quality

No need to change the batteries any time soon

For gaming the main thing is to have a good mouse with a good sensor, which can be had cheap when you know what to look for.
Keyboard doesn't matter nearly as much anything will do for that.

For the mouse there's two great options,
Razer Viper Mini - $40.81 on amazon
    Logitech G203 - $36 at EB Games

    Keyboard

$30.99 right now will do perfectly as you said you wanted siome kind of back light. Free Postage if you use the kogan first trial.

Whatever you do don't buy a kmart mouse please, Good quality gaming mice is cheap enough as shown above that you can get quality without paying a lot.

I own the razer viper mini myself and use it regularly use it despite owning Logitech G pro X Super light. which is an over $200 mouse.

      +1 for the kogan keyboard

also note for gaming you would want the blue switch

Check sound tests on youtube before choosing a switch.
Blue (clicky) switches are the most annoying sound so I would not recommend them if your kids are going to be banging away on them. In my opinion no switch type is inherently "better for gaming", it's down to personal preference and depends on a lot of factors. For a cheap keyboard the sound difference between red and brown will be pretty minimal.

        • I'd already placed my order for the Blue switch keyboards, but I'm not too worried about the noise because they'll be using them in their own bedrooms and this way I'll definitely hear whether they're gaming vs doing homework etc!!

@jolt: haha using them as an audible monitoring tool is a good idea. Mech keyboards are a fun rabbit hole to go down so I hope your kids like them. Maybe you'll be convinced to get one yourself :)

      • Appreciate the extra input on the Blue switches, I wouldn't have known which ones to order otherwise!

    • Thanks so much, great advice here and I've ordered 2 sets of the Razer Viper Mini and Kogan Blue Switch Keyboard.

Kids are excited and the mouses will arrive tomorrow too!!

    • Bugger, that looks like a great combo and especially for that price.
