Washer Dryer Combo or Washer Only

Hi Ozb's,
In a dilemma whether it's worth buying washer+dryer combo or stick to washer only. Are there any cons of combo? I am currently looking at https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/bosch-10kg5kg-se… - can views/opinion?

Thanks in advance,
Sean

Generic con is the more working parts, the higher likelihood the machine fails as a combined system.

Whether it is a good deal for you is how often you use the dryer function, and how much it is costing you more compare to washer only.

    • Thanks….we are currently managing without dryer, face some tricky situations especially in winter if kids school clothing hasn't dried it time or when we need wash quilts/quilt covers/bed sheets etc..

Having said that, thought process behind buying combo is spend more now for long term use.

      Thanks again,

in my personal experience stay separate,
generally washer dryer combos have about a 50% wash load capacity derating for drying, and it also means 1 machine to fail. ( which I would say is more likely as 1 load of washing will / can require 2 drying cycles)

2 machines give the ability to have a load washing as while your second is drying.

I don't know anyone personally that has chosen a 2 in one if they have the space for separate appliances and been happy with it, although maybe in the last few years they may have improved but I wouldn't buy one as hated the last one I had
    but YMMV

    I've used a washer/dryer combo and I had 2 main issues:

    1. You can't dry as much as you can wash. Usually the dryer can only handle about half (or less) of a full washer load.

    2. Obviously you can't wash the next load until the first is dry, which can take some time.

I am single, so I could cope with these limitations. It might be harder to manage with a family.

  • Take separate units. We had a Samsung washer/ dryer before we got separate units. I’m addition to not being able to dry as much as it washed, it took 3-4 hrs to dry. Due to the drying mechanism used it used water to dry as well!
Now the Heat pump dryer does the job in 1.5hrs and the clothes are cupboard dry.

all combo units I've used and nasty and don't work correct.

  • Get individual units.
Like a coffee machine with a built-in grinder, if the grinder was to die then you have only half a machine working and will need to buy a new grinder or whole new machine.
    IMO - go individual units.

I posted something similar a while back and ended up getting a stand alone washer and dryer as opposed to the 2 in 1 based on the comments. Builder ended up installing our provision after a couple chats.

  • we have a fisher paykel combo unit and love it. the best thing is putting cloths in overnight and they wash and are die in the morning. so good if you put the washing on when your asleep or at work. with 2 units you have to transfer. once you get used to the time saved using a dryer not hanging out the washing and bringing it in, you'll never go back

  • Definitely go for separate units! I tried a combo unit once when I was staying in a serviced apartment and it took so long it was absolutely pointless. May as well have hung the washing out to dry!

  • never had a dryer never had an issue

    • Not even peg marks on your shirts? 😁

      • honestly no, maybe because soft line and poor clamping pegs

Use coat hangers. You can hang more on the line that way also. Often you'll find clothing shops giving them away.

        • Plus one on that. Get the plastic coated ones. Saves on ironing effort.

  • If you have a combo and 1 dies you have to replace the whole thing..
if you have 2 separate units, 1 dies you replace 1

    YMMV

  • It's been a while, but used to have a combo - had more problems/service calls with it than I ever had with separate washers and dryers.

  • Look at stacking separate washer/dryer if you don’t have much room.
