MedSense Infrared Non-Contact Thermometer TF01 $49.98 Delivered @ Costco Online (Membership Required)

450

Kids are all sick and I'm running out of ear cap replacements for the Braun in ear thermometer. Works well when one of the kids is sick and you can keep using the same cap a few times, but when all kids are sick and you constantly need new caps, it becomes costly.
Temporal artery thermometers are not generally as accurate as in ear or axillary thermometers but this has been approved by the FDA and the TGA as an accurate medical device and is used by my local GP.

Cheapest I could find was $95 with eBay plus and $129 at Catch.

Why do you need to waste money on ear cap replacement? If you only use it within the family then why not just get alcohol wipe to clean them after use. Even not cleaning it won't make an infection risk unless you want to poke it into an open wound?

Personally don't want to spread possible ear infections between the kids.
I've never considered alcohol wipes, but that is a great idea. Thank you

I am still looking for some flexibility since the two year old sleeps lightly and wakes up when we poke her ears and ends up waking up multiple times a night. Hoping this will eliminate or at least reduce the amount of times that occurs

      • Some tympanic thermometers have a built in safety measure not to take a temp without a probe cover attached, so maybe check yours first. Ears do have bacteria even if its not an open wound, for example there maybe discharge which is a possible infection risk.

An even cheaper way is to buy isopropyl alcohol in bulk (I buy 5L for around $30) and use a 70% mix with water to sanitise the cap (use a tissue or toilet paper).

      • You can also buy cheaper generic ear caps. Definately recommend the Braun In Ear.

        • Our Braun just died, now only giving an error code 'POS' any time we try and use it, which seems to be a common error with no fix. Despite standing for 'position' changing the positioning does not fix it at all, YMMV, but for me it's no now an expensive P.O.S.

Also in a pitch black room, when the screen lights up it makes it almost impossible to see where you are sticking it. Would make much more sense to have a small light on the ear side to light up the ear, and only light up the screen one the temp is recorded.

I think this is the one without the annoying beep that used to wake my kids up in the middle of the night.

    • +4

You can press and hold the "mem" button to mute it

Since we saw them using these in the Children's hospital we haven't looked back: https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/100568/vicks-digitalā€¦

$18.00, accurate and fast. If your kids aren't old enough to put under the tongue, it works under the arm as well.

I have this one, plus I bought the Infra-red version during the Amazon Prime day sales. They were about 1/2 the price of Chemist Warehouse. Have been accurate with checking everyone's temperature.

'easy way to determine temperatures in 15 seconds'

      Fast relative to what?

      • +1

compared to the several minutes recommended for some other models/thermometer-types?

  • Price Costco

in our family one ear cap lasts a few months. it is extremely unlikely any infection can be transferred like that, especially respiratory or digestive. if we're talking about people living under the same roof you're more likely to spread infection talking to each other or sharing household items.

good price but not really that accurate on a very cold day.

we have both non-contact & contact models and non-contact model is not that accurate albeit it's convenient.

What's a good one to get for in ear thermometer?

    • Interested in this too

    • I have a Braun Thermoscan 7 IRT6520, which I believe is one of the better ones for home use. Tried to link one on Amazon but prevented from posting!!!!!

Anyway, have also tried several non-contact ones but in my experience they are not as reliable as the Thermoscan 7. The accuracy and reliability of an in-ear thermometer is more important to me than the convenience of non-contact. YMMV

Note the good suggestions in other posts about re-using disposable caps to cut down on the ongoing cost.

  • Look like the free one I got from eBay Plus.

  • +1

I label the caps and reuse.

  • Hmmm should i get this to measure the temperature for soldering
