  • How does it compare to the Nvidia Shield I wonder.

  • +1

I see beelink had some design "inspiration"

  • This is a massive noob question but what does this do?

  • Only if it comes with AU Plug.

  • +1

By the looks of a pic in the review, this runs Android, not Android TV. Specs are secondary to a poor UI experience.

Save up the extra and get a shield. They just work, and very well at that

    • You pay less for the X88 and get less.
It decodes 4K 60fps/8K 24fps max as opposed to GT King Pro 4K 75fps/8K 30fps. It has no HDMI 2.1, no support for Dolby Atmos/Vision. The latter is as close as you'll get to the Nvidia Shield and the king of all TV boxes the Zidoo Z9X. I'd rather fork out $200 on a Beelink than some unknown overspec'd box

      • How does it compare to Apple TV 2021? A12 seems to be much more powerful than s922x

usual poorly disguised anti-chinese comments which have helped this site become more useless - much like the abc really…

  • I've got Pro version . Compared to crap Android TV Box that I used this is really good . It runs full Android with PS so you can install any app . It can be rooted and custom roms are available to make it even better UI experience . Remote feels good and it works fantastic . Highly recommended if you after something that can run full Android on your TV.

    • Where can you get custom roms for Android TV boxes?

edit: Google search, XDA. Based on the chip (i.e. S905x) Roms are available for some of these boxes.

Like you said xda forum is the answer . I'm using Alvatech Rom for this Android box . Works good .

  • Netflix, Amazon 480p.

    • Most who buy these boxes have a smart TV and already have these apps on the TV. These boxes are mostly used as a media centre for apps such as Kodi/Libreelec etc. If you want a box to do 4K Netflix etc, Mecool KM2 is the best bang for buck

The last mecool I bought for Netflix etc, had their DRM licence revoked within a few months… Not sure I would buy a cheap Chinese Android box again.

        • Try get a refund or replacement device from the store you purchased it from. I'm pretty sure their latest model is still running without issues.

If you want a box to do 4K Netflix etc, "Chromecast with Google tv" is the best bang for buck

  • These boxes are quite good to run CoreElec (a fork of Kodi) upon.
(It's a total firmware conversion - no more Android at all.)

  • How is this better than the $99 Google Chromecast TV?

From what I am understanding from the various comments above:

      Generic Chinese Android device:

Not Android TV - this is a clear disadvantage, unless you are modding and/or running Kodi.(CBF with that, those days are behind me.) In my experience the UI experience is painful.

Doesn't run streamed services like Netflix at decent resolutions.

      Shield/Mi box/Google dongle:
      Runs Android TV(decent UI experience)
Can still be tweaked to run various sideloaded apps.

Dunno why anyone bothers with Kodi TBH, unless you have ample time to reconfigure it.

      • some just run those kodi builds they get from the intarwebz.

some see android tv as a con because they dont have the full playstore like they see on their phone or tablet.

they are not keen or are in the know how to sideload apps. just saying.

        • Yeah, I used to do all that repository stuff. Even with the builds, you still take it further with customisation which turns into a rabbit hole.
Ultimately, some colleagues and I found we spent more time configuring than watching and went with apps like Morpheus, Terrarium etc instead. Now BeeTV is a solid and simple app to use amongst many others Terrarium variants like Catmouse. Sideloading apps via filelinked is the way to go for ease of use.
