Seeking Recommendation for Reliable Non-Expensive CAT6-Based HDMI Extender Balun Pair for 1080p Media Device

Hi

Can anyone recommend (ideally you have used one) a cheap reliable HDMI extender balun pair (sub $100) that supports 1080P@50/60HZ with HDCP 1.4 over a CAT6 cable.

I've got an existing Binary HDMI matrix switch with balun connected to an old panasonic plasma TV; I just have the one input device now - a fetch tv mighty.

I've never been able to get the Fetch TV to work with the matrix switch and balun for any resolution other than 720p or 1080i.

Yet if I connect the Fetch TV directly to the TV, I can get the 1080p@50hz.

So I think it is the really old matrix switch at fault. There are lots of cheap hdmi extenders on ebay - but I'm curious if anyone has actually used one and had success - particularly with HDCP content.

thanks

You need 2x Cat 5e (from memory) or higher cables. Pretty sure you need gigabit capable Ethernet cable to carry the bandwidth.

I have a cheap (~$20) eBay set that have been working perfectly fine for many years now over 2x15m solid core, hand crimped cat6 cables from my receiver to my projector.
They're just adapters, there's no electronic trickery going on inside, so provided you're getting a good electrical connection between the RJ-45 socket and cable at each end, there should be no issues.

    • For the record, this is the type of adapters that I have (they are unlikely to be the identical units as mine are 5+ years old)

No power required for these, unlike the one below which must be doing some sort of conversion to squeeze the signal into only 8 conductors.

different form factors available on that link (basically, one model can be powered by USB), cheapest is $36

  • I bought this from EzyHD a few years ago. It was only $99 at the time, but did a perfect job at getting me Foxtel IQ2 in another room about 20m away. The neat thing is that it had a built in HDMI splitter and the receiver unit was powered via the sending unit over the single CAT6 cable.

  • I ended up getting the following from eBay US delivered to Australia for ~$150
    Atlona AT-HDR-EX-70-2PS

It is way overkill for what I need, but works perfectly and can do 4k if I ever upgrade my TV from the reliable Panasonic plasma
