How does this compare to extra olive oil

    • It’s different haha! Do not use this for cooking!

      • +10

I add this to stirfrys all the time.

        • Wait so you actually use this as a replacement for normal oil when stir fry ?!

          • @sauce2k: Absolutely. What is "normal?"

Usually I use a combo of oils, this one is specifically added for the awesome taste and smell, often as the last hurrah.

              @fantombloo: I meant like veg oil/olive oil.

Sorry maybe it’s just me being too Chinese. I’ve never seen anyone cooking with sesame oil. It’s often used as a flavour booster eg. marinate, congee and stew etc.

Might have to give it a go next time then!

              • @sauce2k: I've never cooked with olive oil.

I don't know if cooking with sesame oil transgresses some (cultural) standards or traditions but I've been doing it for years and it's awesome.

                • @fantombloo: 😂I was taught not to cook with sesame oil growing up and yet to see anyone does for Chinese dishes, so this is definitely new and keen to try next time!

@fantombloo: A lot of local Indians dishes use sesame oil

                • +2

@fantombloo: its a healthy oil, has a high smoking temperature, excellent for healthy cooking for stir frys but not deepfry

                  see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Smoke_point_of_cookin…

                  • +1

@bono: Sesame oil has similar smoke point to extra Virgin Olive oil. If you put in in heated pan|wok, it'll smoke easily and lose a lot of its flavour, definitely not to.

@sauce2k: I add it the end of cooking stir frys as well, love the flavour it gives

                • @Quasi Human: yeh that’s what I do as well :)

@sauce2k: as far as know there is two type of sesame oil, I have got a Japanese made which is pale yellow and is for general cooking. Then my dark amber colour one is for adding in the final stage of the dishes. For cooking there is no rights and wrongs, as long as people enjoy their food. I had an old friend from UK who washes cooked rice for their Asian recipes and when I was invited to the meal. I ate everything but personally I use a rice cooker and I respect how other people cook their meals

                    Cooking
One type of sesame oil, a pale yellow liquid with a pleasant grain-like odor and somewhat nutty taste, is used as frying oil.[10] A second type of oil, amber-colored and aromatic, is made from pressed and toasted sesame seeds and is used as a flavoring agent in the final stages of cooking."

The reason why you can’t use sesame oil for cooking is because it has a very low smoke point. If you use it whilst “cooking” it’ll just smoke off. It needs to be added at a point when no more heat will be applied to the dish. This is why it’s commonly used at the end of the meal - ie seasoning in soup, or dashed over cooked vegetables. Dumplings seems to be an exception - I assume because they are sealed and maybe the oil can’t escape that easily? No idea.

        • I seared chicken in sesame oil this evening prior to adding the pieces to a curry I was making, to give it a bit of smoky background and introduce some maillard reaction.
It has a lower smoke point than some oils, but still over 200 deg celsius which is enough for a lot of cooking situations.

    • Completely different. Both oils are fantastic in their own rights and for different applications.

  • Can't add to cart! Was deciding whether to get 2 or 3…

FYI this is normally about $10 for a 750ml bottle at my local asian grocer

Personally I recommend U try Korea Ottogi brand sesame oil. Much more intense flavour then Yeos and LKK.

    • Yes, Korean or Japanese ones are much better but they cost more

    • OOS again :)

  • 2 tbsp sesame oil + 1 tsp salt + some cracked black pepper is a good dipping sauce for bbq meat. Thank me later.
