Are Techfast Prebuilt PCs Worth Buying?

I'm looking to get a PC for gaming, coding and 3d modelling (budget of ~$2.5k btw). I've seen a lot of Techfast builds being posted that seem good on paper. However, I've seen comments on OzB and reddit saying that the parts aren't that great and it's better just to just build one yourself since most parts need changing. Just wondering what y'all have to say about this. If you have a PC from them, please let me know your experience with it.

Are there any better alternatives for prebuilts? Should I just build one myself?

YGWYPF. Generally these deals are good right now from a CPU/GPU price point given the secondary market.

Personally if it were me, I'd buy the computer unbuilt (It's an option) and sell the stuff I don't want to buy the parts I do.

    • Yeah I might end up doing that, just seems like most parts need upgrading so it'd be a bit of a hassle.

solidworks ? just build one yourself.

Bought one a few weeks ago and I've had no issues with it.

Like @toshjammi mentioned, they are good from a CPU/GPU price point.

They provide you with all the empty part boxes, so you could take out and sell what you don't want.

    • Damn that seems like a nice deal, better than similar techfast builds from what I can tell. Thanks for sharing this, might end up getting it.

I bought one of their cheaper builds for $600

    Ryzen 5 2600 RX 570 8GB 120GB SSD 8GB DDR4 Gaming Computer Desktop PC + 2 Games

It lasted 13 months before dying. They had little interest in repairing it & below is the response I received when mentioning ACL.

I couldnt be bothered fighting it & cut my losses.

"I apologize for the delayed response. Our 12 month RTB policy is with complication with the ACCC and ACL. If this system was in the price range of $10,000+ then you are correct as the value of that system should last longer than 12 months."

That is what you get for not spending $10k+ on a system, tsk tsk.

total BS that they expect a $600 computer to not last more than a year.

I bought a built computer from MSY for $1600 more than 11 years ago. The only replacements were just the wifi card (the onboard one is malfunctioning) and GPU (just an upgrade).
      Otherwise, it's still running fine.

So a $600 computer, I'd expect that to last several years, not 13 months.

    • I keep my computers for about 5 years before choosing to upgrade (because consumerism, etc).
I've never had one actually fail in 20 years.

Thanks for your post though, I've sometimes been tempted by the techfast deals, now I'll avoid them.

    • Damn that sucks, thanks for sharing your experience. I doubt their service has gotten better so I'll probably avoid them.

That's horrible. Sorry to hear on your part. I'd avoid them now, even though I'm looking to buy a new PC (my old PC has been working happily for 8 years).

    • What was the final outcome? That seems like an easy complaint to the dept of consumer affairs and they would sort that out easily.

What was actually broken out of curiosity?

      • No idea what the problem was, its sitting in a corner collecting dust. I dont have the skills or hardware to diagnose the problem. From my understanding, Id need 2 of everything, & swap out to determine the issue. The initial email to them is below. I decided to cut my losses. As an uneducated guess, a PSU issue maybe, perhaps?

Hi. I purchased a Ryzen 5 2600 from you last year. It wont turn on. Is there anything you can do for me?
WhenI press the button nothing happens. There is no movement of any fans. Im not sure if there are any lights on the motherboard, but if so, no lights light up.

          Bizzare.

Sounds like a PSU issue, the PSUs they supply are very cheap and i've read other comments saying theyve experienced similar issues.

A psu swap isnt too difficult and can be done for $50.

Or you could sell the gpu as the mining boom has sent prices crazy:

          • @cheesecactus: Wow. Ive got a couple of rx 570's lying around. Looks like easy money.

            Cheers for that

@chalks1971: might want to get onto it asap as prices are starting to return to normal (crypto took a huge dive recently so people arent paying stupid prices for gpus anymore)

Bought one about 12 months ago, it remains unmodified and works fine.

  • I have referred some family on to their deals recently, more out of the burning desire to not build computers for anybody that is not myself anymore.

Generally they seem to have worked out alright aside from some lengthy waits sometmes.

Bought a Techfast computer last year on Black Friday.

Had to send it back to them twice for them to figure out that my motherboard was faulty and my GPU was playing up.

Once diagnosed, they sorted out replacement compnents as quickly as they could and then sent it back. No issues since.

I bought one of their deals about 18 months ago for a cheap-ish gaming rig. I discovered a minor issue with the motherboard, which they resolved quickly via email-based support. Their cheap no-name cases are poorly ventilated (which I suspected at the time) which can lead to high internal temps.

At the time I bought, the price for a complete system was lower than just buying the CPU and GPU at retail, so I had no qualms about value.

At the moment, they seem to offer extraordinary value because they can source GPUs and sell them at a reasonable price.

It seems to me they've moved away from using the very cheapest hardware and tend to sell more brand-name stuff recently - I suspect it was because of warranty issues.

I would happily buy again if the need arose.

    • Ok thanks for sharing your experience.

  • I've bought three PCs over the last couple of years with varying levels of experience.

First one was a $700 deal and prebuilt. Two weeks delivery as normal. The CPU was not upgraded like I paid for; I wouldn't have known without checking the specs in Task Manager before I realised which was a bit disconcerting.

Second pair of PCs I actually bought on their eBay store (they also have a Catch store under their Allied Gaming brand). Slightly more expensive than some other deals here, even after the 15% eBay code I used, BUT it also included a cheap KB+M and monitor. I asked for parts which was not a problem, and FOUR DAYS LATER I had a massive amount of boxes!!

I've never heard of a Techfast deal being delivered so quickly but I'm guessing it might be an 'eBay sales get priority' thing with staff so they avoid negative feedback… but it could also be an outlier order set they had ready to go or something.

    • Didn't know they had an ebay store, I'll check it out now thanks.
