Is $7500 a Good Price for a 10kw Solar System?

Hi,

I was wondering if this is a good price for a 10Kw solar power system ($7.5k after all rebates in VIC - down from $13k total cost):

26 × 390W Jinko Solar Tiger TR All Black - JKM390N-6RL3-B
1 × GoodWe GW10K-MS · 10000 W

Thanks.

edit: it includes free upgrade to electric board 12 pole and tilt frame included

Have you done lots of reading on solarquotes.com.au?

Step 0 anyone that approaches you - whether by email, phone or doorknock - immediately make a note to never ever deal with them

Step 1 do lots of reading on solarquotes.com.au and elsewhere

Step 2 get several quotes from their recommended installers, just from the ones that will do a proper site inspection not just google maps. You can get quotes from others that are recommended by people local to you too even if they aren't on the site, just check their reviews critically

Step 3 look at the reviews of the installers and disregard any quotes that come from installers without stellar reviews

Step 4 compare the quality of solar panels and inverter they will install and the price - if someone will install worse equipment for a higher price you can disregard their quote [solarquotes.com.au has that info]

Step 5 choose from the remaining - decide if you want the quality / features of the better stuff for the higher price or not [though I do recommend getting an inverter where you can check online about current usage - helps you form good energy use habits and you can keep an eye and make sure the system is working as it should be. Note the installer will probably have to install something extra for this to work, make sure to ask them about this to avoid disappointment after the install]

Step 6 book installation with the winners and pay deposit. Then follow their instructions.

If you follow these steps you won't need to make anyone else do your work for you, you'll have a very good idea of what you need and want and will know you're not getting ripped off.

    • Thanks. We've done the research and have received many quotes. This seemed to be the better price for the type of panels/inverter for the 10kw systems. Just wanted to know what other ozbargainers thought.

  • My sister just paid $3200 for 7.5kw system with 7.5 kw Sofar inverter and 20 @ 370w Suntec panels. In qld so no state rebate but slightly higher recs.

At that rate your system looks a bit overpriced?

    • That seems to be an amazing price! Sadly we couldn't find many quotes near that price at all with all the rebates. Think the cheapest was $5k, but we weren't sure about the installer.

    • Was this in Brisbane? If so, who was the installer?

The price is secondary. The primary consideration should be the installer and their reputation. After all, what good is a warranty if the installed has shut up shop - many of them do.

    • Yeah definitely. That's why I'm leaning towards this offer compared to the $5k one. This installer has been in the industry for awhile too.

      • I went with one that been industry for a while. It sent insolvent a couple of months after mine was installed. That metric means little.

        • Ouch that's a tough one. Hope nothing goes wrong in the long run. I think we still get product/panel warranty from the manufacturer themselves too, but I guess it's all a gamble!

  • Gross price is too much. Should be about $1k per Kw so your 10Kw would be gross $10k before rebates (rebates change).

Got a 10kw done with 2x 5kw inverters (due to 2 phase rural property) and cost $8.5k net about 1 year ago. If you are in Metro you are getting ripped off.

Also your $7.5k includes the interest free loan so you're actually paying closer to $9.5k for a 10kw.

    • Sorry, forgot to add, the 7.5k is total cost for us. Price after loan is $5.5k

But will definitely re-look at this further as it's about $3k over the gross $10k mark as you said.

      • The rebate is $1850. Then $1850 interest free loan. $13k less $4k is not $5.5k net.

  • Also make sure that your energy distributor will even allow a 10kw system. They have been clamping down hard on this size in VIC as well and may not even let you connect to the grid in certain areas or require export limitation.

    • And probably not worth it given feed in is going to 6.7c.

Only put in enough for own usage. Excess is just wasted feeding into the grid to be honest.

      • We use about 30kw on average and getting a 7-8kw systems were a lot more expensive for some reason, so decided to get the cheaper 10kw system for just a bit extra.

        • Solar people are not all that bright.

5kw inverter is 6.6kw of panels.

Next size up inverter is usually 10kw and you should actually get 13kw of panels.

Why? Because your panels don't produce 100% of rated capacity and with STCs the panels are cheap. It is inverter and labour that is expensive. Any excess production by panels above 10kw is not used.

If you ask for inbetween sizes installers basically go into have a seizure because they can't work out how to put a limit on a 10kw inverter. Some suburbs the energy network has put in limits. You might install 10kw but they only allow 5kw or zero export.

  • Price seems reasonable and the equipment chosen are good brands. Have you got a few different quotes to compare?

    • Yeah had a few quotes to compare. Cheapest was $5k all up, but the installer didn't have too many reviews. The extra $2k is with a better reviewed installer and also better equipment. I think i'm going to sign with the $7k deal as the VIC rebate is getting lowered tomorrow anyways.

  • Slightly off topic but relevant

Those who have a tile roof and installed solar panels - did you get your roof checked first for problems with cracked tiles, repointing etc??

Just curious as every now and then I think about solar, but I have an old roof and I know it is going to need attention at some point. Bit hard to do that once you have panels installed.

    • For what it's worth, I had a few home visits to do quotes. They do check the roof regarding condition, but thankfully my roof was okay.

I had roofer check my roof first. My roof was in pretty good condition but it needed repointing. He told me to do the repointing and cracked tiles after solar installation. He said to make sure to get the installers to move all tiles out from under the panels if they are broken. He replaced all the tiles and repointing after I had my solar install.

    • Thank you for the replies.
