Protein Powder and BCAA's or EAA's

I have just started a new or job that involves lots of heavy lifting within the past 2 months. In the past 2 weeks I have been feeling the soreness and fatigue in my daily life as well as on the field when I am playing sport.

I don't have a budget limit as I feel it is a necessity for the work I am doing (lots of lifting of 1-20kg objects over 8-10 hours) + plus the sport that I play. I'm not too knowledgeable in what protein brands or choices to choose as well as what is the most effective. However, from previous experience I have tried using the mass gainers and whey protein previously from optimum nutrition but my body doesn't handle that brand well 😬 (not lactose intolerant). Musashi has been alright, no sickly feeling. But I'm looking to branch out and look for other brands.

For the amino acids, I'm leaning more towards getting the essential amino acids rather than the branched chain amino acids but either should be fine 🙂

Hopefully, someone can suggest a great tasting and easy mixing protein for a newbie like me. Even better if it is an Australian brand using Australian ingredients 👍

Thanks Ozbargain, hopefully someone can help me out with a good deal 🙂 I hope I haven't missed anything. If so, ask away and I'll try and answer to the best of my ability.

Honestly for your lifestyle you can get enough protein from foods and that is actually recommended if you can meet those targets. Standard diet is 1g protein/kg bodyweight. For a 70kg person that's about 2 scoop of shake or 200grams of chicken. So diet protein source is preferred if yo ucan meet the goal in diet. if not then shakes. If shakes then just get a quality protein shake. I used bulk nutrients for about 5 years happily. They're Aussie.

Don't overthink it - get a protein concentrate in your flavour of choice. Have it after your heaviest exercise/work.

Your initial soreness is more than those muscles have never been used in that way before and are damaged (good damaged). They will repair and become stronger. You d on't need a mass gainer.

    AminoZ, and Pure product Australia.

Both great, prefer AminoZ Vanilla flavour, it's great!

I would do research on aminos too, you really don't need them. Creatine might help with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), but that will subside on its own soon too.

    jsut my 2c -

    • protein wont help with muscle soreness - but it'll help you build muscle faster, which means you'll build up the muscles and endurance faster and feel less soreness as you get stronger.

    • as people are saying here, you can probably get the protein you need from normal foods, but that's up to you.

    • protein powders should not be used to replace all your meals, just to help boost your protein intake.

    • there are many protein flavours, but it's really hard to find one you love so much that you want to drink it. You need to understand that you're drinking the protein because you have a purpose (get xboxhueg).

    • In terms of brands etc -

Bulk Nutrients is a local aussie company that has decent rep, decent prices and decent taste - I made the switch years ago from those off the shelf brands (Optimum Nutrition) and saved a tonne.

I've since switched to MyProtein (international company) as they are cheaper still, and have many many flavours for me to experiment with - it's nice to have many flavours to cycle through rather than the plain ol chocolate that gets boring quick (and it's also really hard to find a choc flavour you can stick with long term).

Lastly a quick tip about choosing protein flavours - if it sounds good as an ice-cream, it'll probably be good as a protein shake, given that WPI and WPC are basically milky substances. Avoid those non-dairy protein powders they taste like arse and are aimed at lactose intolerant people. If you can spare the calories do not get the stevia / sugar free flavours, they are bad.

My personal faves at the moment are:
    - The Chai flavour from TrueProtein when they used to do it (best chai flavour ever)
    - The banana and Honey from True Protein is one of the best banana flavours I've had.
    - From MyProtein - Blueberry Cheesecake is insanely good, as is Hokkaido Milk. Macha is decent if you like macha frappe's - avoid dark chocolate it has a weird chemical aftertaste.

  • Protein isn't going to solve your problem. Getting used to the work will.

  • Bulk nutrients has totally reasonable protein, priced quite well. Decent flavours.

Commenters are half right, half wrong. Protein and supplements won't fix the muscle pain- but eating well (you still want carbs, greens, fibre etc.!) will fuel you well, help your muscles repair and minimise burnout and neuromuscular fatigue.

  • BulkNurtrients and AminoZ have been my go to's. Price wise, AminoZ often have specials (20% off, etc.) and free shipping that make them cheaper than Bulk. As mentioned AminoZ own brand WPI vanilla is great.
