Bonus $200 G/C ($500 total) on $69 Telstra 12M Contract (Min Cost $828, New / Port in Users) @ JB Hi-Fi

1490

Bonus $200 JB Hi-Fi gift card on the Telstra $69 plan, that's already available with $300 of JB gift cards.

Brings it to a total of $500 gift card and net of approximately $27.33 a month.

Staff member told me that they weren't allowed to advertise the deal (looking around the store, this was true) because Telstra wanted them to sell more of the $99 plans. Also mentioned that it was available today only (28 June), but he may have just been trying to put the hard sell on me.

Edit:
Seems to be available in all stores. Updating to 30 June based on what people are saying below.

Mod: Some users have reported a $10/month port in credit after some effort/attempts on live chat.

Any ideas if available at other stores? Anyone?

    • +4

These Telstra + JB are not usually store specific. The store rep will telll you it is store specific because they are earning a commission from the sales and want you to tell everyone else to go to that specific store.

    • -1

Try calling their phone division. It’s a seperate unit based somewhere else that seems to do the nations’ phone orders.

    • it is till 30th Jun and all stores

    • +1

Just confirmed the deal is running at my local store in W.A.
She said for that branch (Rockingham) the deal ends close of business Wednesday.

    • Not worth it for me.
But for others, a good deal.

  • +1

I’ve been off Telstra service for only a week now or so. Currently on Kogan/voda.
Can I come back yet? Haha

    • +4

IIRC you have to wait 30 days before carriers consider you to be a new customer. Hopefully, someone else who knows for sure can validate this.

      • You used to be able to get around this if the JB store-person didn't care about the 30 day wait, it worked for me once, but that was a while ago.

        • +3

Getting to know JB staff personally is something that will always pay off in the long term.

          • @KangaDrew: But they dont stay in their job for too long… so bit hard.

    • I did the same, but tried my luck within the 30 days (was maybe 20 or so days with Kogan) and just said nothing at JB when one of these deals came along at Christmas time and it was no issue

    • Ive personally been turned away at the 28 day mark. But have heard others not have an issue.

This time around i jumped on a lebara 30 day plan.

    • you can always just sign up to it and jump on to live chat to get them to port your number across (your current number has to be with telstra of course). Did this last year and the online rep didn't say anything. Although my brother had to hassle them a bit for it to work.

      • Same, but it worked fine

    • It really just depend on the person who sign you up. If the staff refuse, then just to other JB store.

  • I'm glad the $500 GC for $69 plan is a thing again.

    • +2

Last year they had the same plan with a $500 GC straight up, plus there was a $10 monthly credit for the term of the contract. This one is gonna come out a little bit more expensive unfortunately.

      • I think $10/mo bonus is going to end after 12 months? I'm on this plan as well

        • +3

Ozbargainers will be porting out at this stage anyway

        • Yeah that's correct; same for me. And as per Fancydancer's comment, there'll be a mass port-out from Telstra around Oct this year.

    • I'm still not able to buy something I want from those GC 😕

  • If it was October or November I'd jump on this deal, but unfortunately plan doesn't end till December with optus. $27.33pm is a great deal.

  • awesome, I've been waiting for this deal to come back. hopefully the stores I go to in Brisbane will honour the deal :)

    • Please let me know if you able to get the deal with $500 gc

      • +2

Queen St Mall offered it to me this morning

        • any idea, which mobile phones model / brands they're offering on this $69 plan?

  • +2

just called and they said no additional 200 off for 69 plan

    • They offered it to me at the Queen St Mall store in Brisbane

  • -1

Been on Optus $40/month for 80GB for more than two years now.

Is this worth jumping over to?

Is a port in $10 credit guaranteed if you chat to Telstra online after you sign up at JB in store?

    • Actually very unlikely judging from my experience and most comments on similar threads

      • +1

So they stopped giving out $10 port in credit?

Because I'd jump if it's $59/month with the $500 gift card.

        • It gets offered from time to time as part of the deal on signup in store. Telstra will not retrospectively apply it normally.

        • ppl have been getting it from Live Chat.

          • +1

@samehada: I called a JB to ask if they offer the $10 credit and they advised this promotion doesn't contain that. In past threads, a few people said that they got it by asking nicely to the staff at hand while others said they got it through live chat.

So far, I haven't seen anyone on this thread state that they successfully got this $10 credit. It could be the case that it simply doesn't occur anymore unless you get really lucky with live chat.

            • @eltito: People above are saying it’s available through live chat

          • @samehada: I had no luck today

    • I had the exact same plan - just went up to $50/month

      • Hit up Optus chat and ask nicely and say that you’re considering moving to another carrier. They will give you an ongoing $10 credit to keep you.

        • All they did was try to upsell me. Wouldn't give me the $10 :/

          $45 for 20gb is terrible
And tried to get me to get a new number
          Or a new phone. Sigh.

        • +1

Got 10% off… So $5 increase, which is in line with their current $45 plan but with the 80gb of data and 4gb of roaming data, should I get to travel overseas again.

          • @bluedufflecoat: Depends on your luck and what rep you get on chat. I must’ve been very lucky.

  • Can you use the gift card to pay for the plan?

    • No

      • -6

Thus its not $27.73 pm as OP mentioned above.

I have no idea where he came up that amounts from.

  • +7

I don't see the value in these deals if you are not a major user of data or you really need the 5G speeds. I use a lot of data and have never really used more than 15gb in a month. And quite frankly Im pretty happy with 4g speeds.

Considering you can get a Boost Prepaid 12 month Sim for $250 that averages out to:

    • $20.83 per month
    • Unlimited talk and text
    • Unlimited international calls to select countries including New Zealand and India
    • 20gb per month (on average but obviously this is a 12 month expiry so the data rolls over so if you don't use it one month you can use it in the next 12 months. This is not offered on Telstra deals)
    • 4G on Telstra network.

The savings here would be $578 per year compared to going on the $69 plan. And the $69 Telstra plans do not have the international calls.

    • +5

If you swindle the $10/month port in credit, this still works out cheaper at $17.33/mo (if you consider the $500 GC real money), and much more data still + 5G which most customers would probably care about more than international calls unless they happen to have family overseas.

      • Can that $10 still be had?

        • I got it on the $99 plan earlier this month at least (and that wasn't even a port in, but a new number which I then had them migrate my old JB contract number onto). First live chat overseas rep took 20 mins to check his notes before going "Yeah sure looks like you should have a credit, will make sure it's on your account", but as always didn't show on the first bill and had to message back after the bill arrived, (though the first rep I spoke to after the bill said only JB could apply the credit despite the earlier rep's promise, but next chat rep the next day applied it just fine and the bill owing adjusted accordingly, sometimes it takes a couple of attempts).

    • +1

True to an extent, but if you are planning to buy something from JB and value the gift card at face value you can equate the plan cost to $27pm. 80GB per month on Telstra for $27pm is a great price. 4G on Telstra is far superior to Boost (speed limited) too. Many sell the GC at a ~10% discount on face value too so for those that don't need international calls the performance advantage is rather worth it.

      • 4G speed on boost and Telstra is the same, I tested myself using same mobile phone in same location.

    • +4

Your analysis make sense if you cannot claim back % on tax. For me, higher end plan can make sense after factoring tax deductions.

      • Does the gift card factor into that, or is it considered 'free'?

        • there is no consideration for the GC. The plan and what's billed is $69/m and the GC has no expiry.

      • +1

Everyone here is probably right. Pros and cons depending on circumstance. Although I wouldnt see anything more than your average usage of data as a bonus.

Only reason I broke everything down here was to help out people who might see benefits in this the way I did. :)

    • +2

I don't see the value in these deals

If your employer pays your phone bill it is a free voucher

    • The Boost is only $78 cheaper over the year if you factor in the $500 gift card which you use to upgrade your phone at any point in the future. Plus if you wait for the $500gc/$59pm deal it works out cheaper than Boost (if you don’t need to call international).

  • I ported out of Telstra to Vodafone 20 days ago in anticipation of one of these deals.

Do you think 20 days is long enough to be out of Telstra?

    • How are you finding service at Voda?

      • It's been fine for voice but data is where I've noticed the drop in quality, particularly inside buildings.
I can handle Voda for a month or two but not any longer.

        • Ah that sucks. I was actually looking at giving them another chance. Haven't been with them in over 10 years though.

          • @Munki: I switched to Voda from Boost earlier this year in anticipation for one of these deals. My experience, while in ACT - the reception was bad. Even though it would say 4G and 2-3 bars, it was slow with the internet and I had issues talking over the phone. Used it a while back while in Sydney though and it was fine there (even used it as a hotspot for the laptop).

I guess it just depends where you are.

            • @eltito: Used Optus in Canberra, usually in Melbourne. Reception was much worse in Canberra.

      • I did the same, a lot of the time ppl can't hear my properly on voice calls when OI'm indoors, or even in my car on the road

  • In lockdown. Can I get this phone deal over the phone?

    • Yes!

      • +1

How does this work? Do you call a store directly? How do they give you the sim?

        • I haven't done it personally but I called them once and they said it can be done. They would possibly either mail you the card, make it click and collect or provider can email you the QR (you might need to check on this one)

  • How long do you need to port out for, for these deals?

I'll be porting out prob late Nov this year, so I'll miss a few, then I need to wait to come back in for one.

    • +1

      30 days.

  • +2

Can I explain to the police that getting this deal is "essential"?

    • +1

Maybe they take a GC as payment for the fine?

      • +1

haha state revenue takes JB giftcards whilst ATO takes iTunes, huh?

    • The local JB is under my apartment (literally across the street). They're open and I'd just be dropping by after I've gone for my daily exercise.

    • I know your pain, I nearly missed a great EBGames trade in deal down here in Vic a while back cause I couldn't get to the store, lucky timing and a short lockdown meant I managed to catch it.

  • -5

This looks more value for money to me!!

As 300GB Data which I could use as broadband and get $350 GC.

    • That's MBB

      • -3

        How's that different from it?

        • no calls/text

  • The S21 offer is extended also to 30 June on the $99 plan. (or 1100 off any other S21/Z-Fold)

  • Anyone checked with The good guys? I will check after my office hours but if anyone checked with TGG pls comment

    • I haven't checked directly with them, but my paperwork says: "JB Hi-Fi & The Good Guys Mobile BYO Plan", so I assume so?

      • I went to TGG and they do not have this offer. They have $400 giftcard offer

  • Waiting for the Good Guys offer. Preferably with 59 per month deal.

    • Out of curiosity, any specific reason? Is it because you prefer GG over JB or something more along the lines that GG might beat this deal?

I'm planning on jumping this deal but am happy to wait if GG will offer something better.

  • Well GG offers this deal time to time. Often with 59 per month. It's easy to negotiate price at the GG. Also I get corporate discounts. So all up it would be more beneficial for me.

  • I ported across to Optus on Wednesday, should i be sweet to port back to Telstra on the 30th to get this deal? (was with telstra prior to porting)

    • +1

      You should generally be fine.

      • +1

        Can confirm, had no issues.

        • I ported from Telstra to Optus last Tuesday. Think it should be no issues porting back like you did?
Anything in particular to say (or not to say) to the JB sales rep?

          • @hurley182guy: Just dont mention that youve ported recently or anything at all really. Also have your optus account number handy cause they use that at some point. I had to find it in the original correspondence emailed when i ported over as they hadnt issued the first bill yet.

  • Signed up at DFO Homebush with my 10 days old Optus prepaid account and no questions asked!

  • can i get new telstra number with this plan and transfer plan to my current Telstra number which is month on plan.
I saw some notes that we can transfer the plan from other number within telstra

    • Yes. This is the right way to do it. All of these comments about waiting to port in or porting out 30 days ago and now being able to port in are nonsensical and missing the point

    • Can confirm this works like a charm! Disconnected my month to month plan, then transfer the number to the new plan 👍🏼

      • How long did the number transfer take? I requested a transfer last night around midnight. This morning, I woke up to find my existing number was cancelled but my number hasn’t been transferred across 20 hours later… I was informed it might take up to 24 hours but still v concerned about losing my number.

      • Did you disconnected the number from month-month plan or asked them to transfer the plan which result the cancellation. If possible share the steps you followed.

        • Just an update.
I had my old telstra number - Month on Month plan.
I got new Telstra number with 69 plan (this offer -
First contacted support team via chat app but they were not able to transfer the plan from new number to old number.

Today i called the support team,
          1) First temp disconnected old number
          2) Transferred old number to new number but new plan stays with that.

This process took about 40 mins.

They were not ready to give $10 offer and they cant add international call to this pack as well.
