How Much Negotiation Can Be Done on a New Kia Rio?

Hi

I am going to buy a Brand New 'KIA Rio Sport Automatic White' Car. I live in Werribee VIC 3030. The driveaway price is $23,490.00 on their website. There will be no old car trade-in.

How much negotiation can be done on this? I can pay cash but I don't think it will matter to the dealer in terms of negotiation.

Thank you.

How much negotiation can be done on this?

    Zero

    Why? covid

Possible options include ask for free mats, a free service etc.

What happened to the CX-5 that you bought in January?
Did you end up cancelling the contract due to the dealer's "fraudulent" activity?

The longer you have to wait for delivery (indicates demand), the less likely they will negotiate on price.

    • The CX-5 is still here. This will be the second car. Thank you.

      @bobbified, have a +1 for research skills.

LOL. Couldn't help it… the name just sounded too familiar and then I remembered the multiple threads last year about "needing" and then "wanting" an SUV. Everyone seemed to be getting annoyed.

        • Yes. I still haven't recovered from that!!! LOL…

    I can pay cash

Salesperson will lose their kickback if you do.

Due to chip shortages discounts on cars are currently a thing of the past. Either wait until things get better or try for 'freebies' when negotiating.

    • Perfect. Thank you.

What did the dealer say when you went in there? Is it in stock or on order? The longer the delivery time the less chance of discounts.

Are you happy to pay $23490? If not, and they don’t offer much discount you’ll need to find another car to buy that fits your budget.

    • I just checked online yet. Haven't been to the dealer yet. Thank you for your comments.

At that point in the price range, and given covid causing a lack of supply, I'd agree that there's likely next to no discounting on it

Though Mr 2 years in car sales across 2 dealerships would likely get his boss to work out something better.

    • that this guy

  • Thank you.

  • depends if its in stock and if a local dealer has any EOFY specials
e.g. a Kia dealer near me has $500 promo on any car closed by eofy… but they have less than 10 cars across their entire range in stock, so selection/availability is limited.
(its only $500, but its better than $0)

  • I wouldn't expect any discount in the current climate, dealers have little to no stock and there's no shortage of customers that are willing to pay the sticker price without negotiating - that's COVID for you.

Might be better this time next year, who knows….

thats what they said last year :)

      • Might be better once everyone is vaccinated and international holidays are available. Not holding breath for that though. It’s gonna be a long wait.

    • Thank you.

  • Honestly i doubt you can get anything off the price you might be able to get an extra or two ie tinted windows, 1st service free, roof rax etc

These extras are usually really expensive but actually cost very little for the dealership to add on so you might get a little more 'bang for your buck' but in terms of price i doubt the salesman will move much in the current market they know they are holding the advantage

If you can wait 12-18months for the chip shortage to end you might fair a better price then - it depends on your situation

      Perfect. Makes sense. Thank you.

      roof rax

      For a kayak?

      Don't forget the bonut protector.

  • How much negotiation can be done on this?

Is it in stock in all car yards around you? If yes, you might get a discount. If it needs to be ordered for you, don't expect any.

I can pay cash but I don't think it will matter to the dealer in terms of negotiation.

It matters, they don't get provision from your financing, so they will not give you a better deal. I suggest you pretend you need financing to get the best price, and then say you will pay with cash.

    • Thank you very much.

  • I will be cautious about buying a new petrol car now with EVs becoming more reasonably priced in the coming years. The resell values for petrol cars will then plunge.

It's a Kia Rio. Least of OP's concerns.

    • Thank you.

  • Don't ever go buy the price they show you on their computer from the RRP price. Go on carsales and other dealers will have brand new pricing on their that will most likely be cheaper, or even a demo price can usually be matched for a new car price.

I can't remember the exact pricing, but from memory my missus wanted to buy a new mazda cx3. They showed us the price on the computer with a couple extras, which came up to 34,000~. I advised them their is a demo for 30k going in another dealership, if they could match or have a demo of same color we will take it then and there. They played the usual "oh we can't match that". So I told my missus lets go. As soon as I said that he said he'll go talk to his manager and be back. Came back said they got no demo on that color only new and can do 32k, I said we're happy to go get the demo to save 2k, as it only had 800kms on the clock. He said ok 30k and the rest is history.

Remember, dealers are in competition with each other. Get a few quotes from different dealers for the same car you want and tell them you've been going to other dealers to get best price.

    • but from memory my missus wanted to buy a new mazda cx3

stories like this from pre-covid/chip shortage times dont really reflect the kind of discount thats generally available in the current minimal stock and long wait time environments though.

Sure, try it out (and on a cx3 you're likely going to get some discount due to it being less stock effected) but unlikely using prices/discount % from 'back then' isnt directly comparable

      • It was only 6 months ago, and the stock was very low. Especially for the color she wanted

    • Thank you very much. This helps a lot.

  • You missed the boat. They were $17500 DA in late 2016

    • Thank you for letting me know.
