Yamaha WXA-50 Amplifier and Streaming Receiver 20%/22% off, $516 ($503 with eBay Plus) Delivered @ Radio Parts eBay

PFYS20PEOFY22

Not the cheapest it has ever been, but definitely a good price for today and about the last year or so.

I've been trying to decide between this and the Loxjie A30 (about $290 from Amazon US and another $130 for an RCM Meanwell power supply). At only $100 more in this deal, the Yamaha is compelling - an incredibly well reviewed amp, it includes Musiccast wired and wireless streaming capabilities (which the Loxjie doesn't), and comes with an Australian warranty. Sold for me!

Ends at midnight tonight.

  • If only this had USB in - doesn't anyone know a good alternative with USB in?

    • Do you mean as in a USB sound card/DAC interface combined with an amp?

      • Yes, with the speaker connectors.

        • A lot of the Chinese amps will do this, but at cost of streaming capability (mostly they provide bluetooth pairing only). Stuff that comes to mind is: SMSL AD18, Topping MX3, Loxjie A30, and some of the Fosi gear. Also the SMSL SA300 when it becomes a bit more widely available.

My luck with this gear has been good (4 long lived amps so far) - but quality control can be a crap shoot, so YMMV. They also almost never come with and Australian power supply - and getting a high quality RCM power supply can add 30-50% to the cost of the amp. (I know because I finally got rid of all of the no-name power supplies in our house - which were mostly attached to these amps)

If you are looking for a cheapish solution and are willing to experiment, these are well worth a shot - but buy from Amazon and allow for returns if you have QC issues. And buy an Australian RCM power supply - the (albeit small) risk of a un-insurable house fire isn't worth the saving!

          • @EthicsGradient: Any that don't have the quality issue that you can recommend. Don't mind paying extra for something with an Australian warranty and that has generally better quality.

@lasterato: Unfortunately, I don't think I can help with this - I've been in the hobby of bang for buck music for a long time, hence the leaning to the chinese amps. I tend to nope out when I see the prices from the more mainstream western brands.

If you want the safe Australia route you probably need to do a bit of research on the various Australian hifi sites (or ask in the forums here or on whirlpool) - but I'm guessing if you want small form factor, usb input and reasonable power out from a reputable brand, you are probably going end up paying through the nose.

If you aren't stuck on desktop form factor, look for a second hand amp or AV receiver with USB in on gumtree - they are a bit big for my needs, but they are definitely excellent value if you are looking for a high quality amp.

          • @EthicsGradient: Sound via Bluetooth is underwhelming compared to wifi streaming

            • @mlburnian: Wouldn't be my first choice either - I'm happy this unit supports wifi, bluetooth and wired ethernet. If it was bluetooth only, I'd use one of our old Squeezeboxes as a transport.

  • What's people's experience with the Musiccast and youtube music? Last time I checked it didn't work.

    • Doesn't work - solution is to buy a Chromecast audio and plug it into this unit

      • And just to be clear, with a Chromecast Audio you use the optical audio capabilities (3.5mm to standard optical adapter/cable).

  • I don't see it available. It's not a chromecast receiver, I wish it was as it would be handy.

They've got direct integration to Spotify so it shows up as a destination for Spotify. Tidal has to be used from inside the musicast app which isn't as good.

As an amp they are good units and do the job of a Sonos amp at half the price.

    • Yeah - I got mine as an amp with the bonus of Spotify Connect. We also use Logitech Media Server, so I can also Airplay and DLNA to stream our music library from this (and even stream spotify via LMS to the amp).

I've also seen that the Spotify Connect implementation is a bit variable - they aren't strictly a Spotify partner - only Spotify compatible, and Yamaha doesn't always bother updating their firmware when Spotify makes changes (e.g. there was a long running issue of not playing podcasts).

  • I have this, I got it for around 400. The musicast app has Deezer and tidal incorporated. Nowhere near as good as using the native streaming apps, for eg you can't skip to parts of songs, but is otherwise ok and you can stream FLAC. But Chromecast audio will fix this.
Spotify you can cast via app so that's great.
It's also really small and looks nice and well built.
At this price point there aren't many alternatives in Australia, unless you want to get cheap SMSL ones

  • Would using something like the rx4a work? Has the benefit of having option of 2 zones, but intended to serve video as well.

  • Please be aware the maximum usb storage capacity that it can read is only 32gig.

  • I use mine with Airplay (1 only, they haven't updated it to v2 unfortunately), but it's been rock solid.

Connected to two Dali bookshelf speakers - sounds great.

    • There should be no hope for getting airplay 2 as I’ve read from somewhere the WXA50 only comes with a single band WiFi, which airplay2 would require a dual band one.
However, I have also read that you could get an airport express that supports airplay 2 to stream music with AUX or optical input, but then you’ll have to do another action to manually turn on the wxa50. If anyone could share some insight which could enable auto start then that’d great.

I don't think there is any way to have it start up on input on AUX.

You can do this from the remote as well as the web interface. It also responds to HTTP REST requests as well, so you could script something up to auto select that.

        • Albeit this is beyond my knowledge but I’ll certainly look into that. Appreciate that!
