Irons vs Garment Steamers?

Our Kambrook Steamline Ceramic Iron has finally died after years of depositing dark gunk on (the inside of) our clothes

I’m looking for a budget friendly, better option, at a bargain price.

I personally find ironing to be an inefficient and boring use of time because I can’t safely browse OzBargain while doing it, so any useful tips on minimising or even eliminating the need to do it would be greatly appreciated.

Do any of the garment steamers actually work to improve the situation?

If steamers get us 80% there in 20% of the time, then I’m happy to give them a go as long as the cost to benefit ratio also works out.

The poll is open for suggestions.

Thanks everyone!

We got a garment steamer a few years ago and our iron hasn't been touched once since then. The steamer leaks a bit of water from the nozzle at times, but apparently this is common with steamers. We just steam work shirts the night before we want to wear them and any drips have dried by morning. So much easier and faster than ironing, no fabric burns or worrying about getting around buttons, etc, and it's actually kind of fun! Just my experience. :)

    • Thanks, that does sound promising.

Which Garment Steamer do you have?

Sorry, had to go and check! We've got the Tefal IT9500. There are probably much better ones on the market now, but we've had no issues with ours.

We got up sold to a Philips PerfectCare Expert Plus Steam generator iron

It is pretty good. Light weight. Kids can iron as there are no settings required. Ie you can go from jeans to silk without changing anything.

Where I volunteer, we had a steamer from K mart it was great , but some things like linen really do come up better if ironed. Personally I would save some money and go to K Mart and if it does not do what you want not a big lose.
