Sony X8000h X9000H and X9500h

was in JB Hifi yesterday checking out TVs. I noticed that although the x9000H and x9500H have better, more natural colours, esp the X9000H, I was noticing some pixilation on fast moving scenes sometimes, esp on the X9000H (there was a loop with some soccer games, so it was when certain players were running) I thought it would be strange that the better spec TVs would be doing this. The guy thought it might have been the way it was set up by the Rep in store….to try to get the highest specs showing. Is there an issue like this in real life use for any of these TVs? I had considered getting the x8000H in the 75" yesterday (as it was only $1998 plus the 15% off for First Responders, so it would have only been $1698 + delivery) but viewing angles didn't seem as good as the other two and I was just unsure overall about each of these panels. We are not in a hurry to get a new TV, so I left it for now, and it is just so hard to know what to get, as they are totally different in real life use compared to in store setup viewing…..although the Hisense Q8 in good guys didn't look so great through their internet streaming and so that was hard to tell as well,(that's what he said was the issue anyway) even though others have said it is great, but some have banding issues

We are sitting between 2 and 2.5m from the Tv and mainly use it for regular use, incl Foxtel IQ4 box, no gaming etc. Want something with low glare as there is a window in front and to the side of it so it can throw a bit of glare on the wrong panels (we have a 55" Samsung series 5, I think, atm)

Should we go for a 65" or 75"? I was unsure if the 75" would be too big, being that close.

The guy thought it might have been the way it was set up by the Rep in store….to try to get the highest specs showing.

This is the problem with TV buying… What you see in store is unlikely to be the same setup you'd have at home. They're all deliberately tuned to "pop" as much as possible in store.

Read some reviews and try to scout out the best option for your viewing requirements.

    • I was hoping someone on here might have had one of these models to let me know if they really do get any pixilation on them, as I noticed instore. I prefer the X9500H only because it has higher specs and has good reviews so far, although in the store….and there in lies the rub, the X8000H looked really good to me in most respects and had no pixilation showing….but that was instore.

      • I've got a x9500g (2019 model) literally just delivered from Sony Seconds eBay.
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/283943294380
Supposedly the same TV as the x9500h minus an antireflective coating on the screen.

I'll let you know tonight after it's set up.

        • ok, thanks

          • @souths123: Having now set up the x9500g, I reckon it was probably a source issue combined with motion interpolation.

Watching the AFL tonight across 7SD, 7HD (1080i) and Kayo (1080p)
The 7SD broadcast was full of noise until I turned off just all of the "fancy" features after which it was far better.
The 7HD broadcast was decent, (again with all features off)
The Kayo unsurprisingly looked by far the best.
No issues with movement at all.

EDIT: TV appears to be knackered…. Stopped responding to commands from the remote, but still displayed a picture. Power cycled at the wall and now no longer even power's up.
            Brilliant!

@ESEMCE: wow, that was fast…..guess it was a second for a reason (the prob obviously not fixed properly) lol. Hopefully they can swap it for another one.
              thanks for the info though.

  • This "pixelation" you are complaining about could be one of the 3 things:

    • Artifacts that appear when using motion interpolation, also known as "soap opera effect" - it increases the framerate, but it is not always perfect.
    • Compression artifacts, which (can) appear in every video, depending on the video source (low bitrate has a lot of artifacts, high bitrate have very little amount of artifacts
    • Just a very low resolution video source, and the TV is forced to upscale it to 4K resolution, giving you the impression that the display is very "pixelated"

All of them are not a problem of the TV's display, but more of a problem of settings or a low quality video source, like a video file ripped straight from YouTube or just your regular Free-to-Air TV.

So, which you reckon is it?

    • IDK…it was instore their loop they play to show off the TV to it's best advantage (I am assuming the SONY loop) so I have no idea which it is….I would have thought it would have been set up by the rep to ensure that didn't happen at all. It was one thing that put me off the two higher TVs TBH. I would imagine all of them were plugged into the same source…so not sure why the X8000H was ok and the 9000 and 9500 weren't, although it was mainly the 9000 that was showing pixilation in certain spots when someone was running. Didn't notice on the x90J as I wasn't paying as much attention to that one…..these were all on the same "Sony" wall at JBHIFI.

      • Any chance you can pinpoint the problem using these comparison images I just made?

        • motion interpolation I think. It was only in certain spots (like side leg and shorts on the player running, they became pixilated)

          • @souths123: Then it is probably motion interpolation - every TV (well, released in the last 10 years I think) always has an option to turn it off.

            • @Blue Cat: ok, our TV is prob around 8 years old and I don't think we have anything like that on it, so prob why I don't know anything about this. I'm surprised they didn't have it turned off in the store.

              • +1

@souths123: From my experiences most of display models have motion interpolation on - whether that is intentional or accidental I will never know haha.

                • @Blue Cat: would you recommend the 65" or 75" for the distance we are from the TV? (just measured and it is 2.5-3m)

                  • +2

@souths123: No idea about the distances, but I would personally buy the 55" model because 55" displays provide best value for money, and I am really tight with my money spending.

Not the OP, but I turn off Motion Interpolation (can't stand it!)

Black Frame Insertion should help with motion blurring (I think?) and that'll definitely be turned off in-store cause it causes the display to "dim".

  • Check out RTINGS.COM
In my opinion I believe the 9500h is the better TV as it has the better processing circuits if you are not into Gaming

New models the X90J are out now, and the X95J is out soon FYI

  • yes, I saw the x90J…not sure why that has been priced at $200 lower than the X9500H already, although I think it shows a bit more glare than the X950H? I still think the X950H is the better tv overall, but price is a factor as it is still fairly high in price, which is why I was wondering if the lower spec X8000H might have been ok for us. I thought if I wasn't in a rush I might wait for it (X950H) to go down a bit more and then wait for the 10% off days at TGG.

    • The X900h Replacement is the X90J the X950 was a superior tv to the X900h but lacked HDMI 2.1 and is essentially a better TV than the X90j when it comes to picture quality, but again, lacks HDMI 2.1
I think when the X95J comes out, (rumoured to be August) the price of the X90j will drop, but that also depends if there is stills stock of the
X950H as well, as it will be obsolete soon when the X95J is released.

I want the X90J 75 Inch, but will wait and see when the X95J is released and at what price.

      • ok, will keep an eye out on prices. One thing I was concerned about with the difference in the 65" and 75" is the energy ratings go down the larger it gets, so it will start getting bigger $$ to run it. We are home a lot during the day (husband works shift work and he will retire in 4 years) so it will be on a lot lol

  • I have the 65” x950g. Got it for $1800 when they were clearing stock to make way for the new H models last year.

The x950h is pretty much the same TV, with an extra layer to improve viewing angles.

Honestly it is a fantastic TV. Fast, snappy interface, great picture quality (and that’s coming from plasma TV owner). The only thing I can fault is how bright it can get in HDR, sometimes the white subtitles or menu graphics in app can be blinding.

    • thanks for that info. Can you turn down those settings?

  • The brightness can be turned down on a per input (and per app) basis but menu text and subtitles seems to be independent or just still incredibly bright compared to the content. It only happens when viewing HDR source, such as streaming 4K movies.

I expect it happens with HDR content on other FALD TVs as well, so I wouldn’t rule out the 950h just because of that.

  • We have the 75" 9000H and it's picture is brilliant and the whole TV experience great. The 9500H is a slightly better picture, but you pay slightly more for it.

If you get either, try to get the aluminium look remote that lights up at night when it senses movement. I can't believe this isn't standard issue for this quality of TV.

    • thanks. yes, remotes can be a pain. We just got the IQ4 and not used to it and in the dark don't know what the hell we are pressing lol

  • I’ve got a 65X9500H and a 75X8000H. Both are great TVs and I haven’t noticed any significant pixelation. Mainly use them to watch TV and streaming, no gaming. The main difference I’ve really noticed between the two TVs is the 9500 handles reflections better and it’s blacks seem darker, especially at night. But whichever you choose I would definitely go online and learn how to customise the picture settings, it makes a massive difference.
