Kayo on Nvidia Shield or Chromecast

Scrapping Foxtel which should be called RepeatTel (yes Im out of therapy), but still love my sport so going with Kayo.

Have Nvidia Shield, few yrs old now and thought of running Kayo on that, but reviews since November last year are fairly average that I've found..

Anyone running it on Shield, or am I better to go with Chromecast? I know nothing about Chromecasts either…

Anyone run it on both, which did you find best?

Thanks

  • I doubt anyone need to run in both but I got no issues over Nvidia Shield Pro. But you at least need 25 Mbps connection, it used to lag on my 10 Mbps connection.

  • I was fortunate, that our Samsung TV supported it.
I found chromecast from my phone or Tablet was too unreliable, and unwatchable.

Which CC? the ones you need a phone for or CCGoogleTV?

    • No idea which CC… I know nothing about them…

although so far it looks like Kayo sucks on either
and it also looks like Kayo is awesome on both :(

I have a CCGTV and it's great with Kayo, don't need a phone, the remote works. You can use a phone if you want.

        • Whats the go with a phone? not needed just learning thats all.

          Does it have VOIP?

            @pharkurnell: I don't think you know what a Chromecast is…

It's a device that plugs into the TV (HDMI) that allows you to "cast" media from your phone to a TV so that more people can watch the media or that you can watch on a bigger screen.

Only the new Chromecast with Google TV has the ability for you to watch shows/movies without the need for a phone (it has a remote) and also allows you to install apps on the device (it has inbuilt storage).

VoIP has nothing to do with it, you can't make calls from it or anything like that.

@GTR12: Nope…as said above, know nothing about them.

Ah ok - so its through your phone, i thought it would be through internet like thru home internet.

So the CC Google TV is through home internet instead?

PS… thanks for the info, much appreciated.

@pharkurnell: No no, its all through home internet.

Think of it this way, you bought a new car but it has no steering wheel, you can't control it.

The phone is your steering wheel for CC v1, v2, v3 and Ultra.

The Chromecast with Google TV (CCGTV) comes with a remote control (the steering wheel), so you don't necessarily need a phone (you can if you prefer).

                I hope I don't sound demeaning.

                • @GTR12: na all ok… just its all new to me thus the confusion plus being old… :(

                  • @pharkurnell: It's probably easier than the shield IMO, it mainly depends on your internet anyway.

                    • @GTR12: Been really good .. optus 100 plan.
Bout to move house, so been with optus 20+yrs… thinkin of Aussie BB… although the fact they advertise on tele lately concerns me they gettin too big and losin their good service..
                      time willl tell.

  • I cast to the older Shield and it works fine. Might as well give it a go since you have the necessary hardware.

Have used Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra and Shield Pro for Kayo on NBN50 HFC. Never experiened any issues with it on any device.

I've found a bit more convenient with the Sheild though with the remote.

  • I've used with my Chromecast (v2) and had no issues at 1080. If you already have a shield I don't think you would go Chromecast but for $50 they are a brilliant upgrades for a dumb tv.

I've had all sorts of issues with Kayo on my v2 Chromecast.. to the point that it's been relegated to being used as a Chromecast Audio only.
Pretty sure v1 and v2 only run Kayo at 720p

      • Could be lying to me but the tv is showing the signal as 1080, and I can't notice any difference in resolution to the broadcast HD channels. Only issue's I've ever had are related to WiFi signal.

      • 100% correct, Chromecast v1 and v2 only do 720p. Tested it myself. You want a v3 or Ultra for Kayo.

  • Don't own a Shield, but I would expect it to be plenty powerful enough to cope.

I run Kayo on VodafoneTV and Xiaomi Mi Box.
I have both set to 50Hz video output as Kayo runs at this framerate and the picture seems smoother than the default 60Hz

  • Running Kayo on NVIDIA Shield, works great.

  • Anyone know any good promo's for Kayo going?

Might give the freebys a go and see how good it is on the weekend with some footy and bike racing

Im guessing Shield is Android for setup?

  • im with Telstra and i got it added for $5 per month. I think it was something to do with Telstra no longer offering AFL on their app. Works perfectly for me on Shield TV. My NBN is woeful at 10-15 mbps. its actually quicker when it goes to telstra mobile backup when the line is down.

  • I have a Chomecast TV and a Shield Pro, both of which I use to watch kayo and it works fine on both, I like the shield better though as it allows you to watch 4 things at once, whereas with the app on Chromecast you can only watch 2 things, one being PIP.
