It seems like the frenzy has well and truly died down for desparados trying to get a console, but still none in stores?

You could buy a Series S for now and upgrade to a Series X later when they are in stock. For PS5 it's not that simple though, I think the discless console sells almost as much as the disc version.
When PlayStation 6 and Xbox Series Z are released.
Semiconductor shortages continue globally and across multiple industries. Console demand hasn't decreased. Not before 2022 till they're in shops.
Sony are aiming to accelerate PS5 production to 22.6m units per year. They sold 8m between Nov 2020 and April 2021.
