Do they not do narrow or wide foot sizes in the comfort craftsman through the Iconic, doesn’t look like it?

    • +1

No narrow but they have wide which I assume is the H in RM Williams sizing

      • Ahk they put it as a separate boot

  • Apparently RM Williams are increasing prices 1 August..

    • Source?

Received an e-mail from an authorised reseller (Blowes Clothing):
“ R. M. Williams are increasing the price of their boots on 1st August 2021.
Why don't you beat the price rise?”

    • +4

Worker: sir, Rm to increase price as of 1 august

Project manager: there will be no more bags then, I’ll tell the boys.

    • -7

well that's stupid. they aren't even worth it at these prices, the majority of what you are paying for is a brand name.

      • +1

I don't own these but I can see how they will be worth it (if the durability is true).

Why pay $100 for crap shoes that last 6-12 months when you can buy these which will theoretically last decades with a resole here and there.

        • -4

i'm not saying that you have to buy crap shoes at 100 dollars, but you can get good quality, leather, goodyear welted boots for much less, the only thing they don't have that these do is the R.M. Williams brand name. 500 dollars is ridiculous for what you're getting.

depending on how much the price rises, it might be cheaper in the future to get some boots custom made for your own feet than to buy rm williams, they are not far off it at their current prices.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Did you have examples? I think the cheapest 'good' goodyear welted boots I've seen are from like Thursday or Meermin which run $350-$400, so it's not that far off.

            • @mjm2: red wing, thorogood make GYW boots at much more reasonable prices, though only from international retailers as the usual Australia tax gets added to local stores. as you said, thursday boots are another option. if you are okay with secondhand you can get ex-army boots for 50 - 100 dollars (depends on seller) i got some 40 year old austrian army boots for about 160 dollars (most of that was shipping) which are still going strong. ariat is another option.

              take a look at the 200 - 300 section: https://www.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/comments/7qxy6p/the_20…

price will be probably around 350 for something on the same level as the RM williams boot after you convert currency, depending on retailer.

these (R.M. W) are fashion boots, not work boots, so as long as you don't soak them in water and neglect them to all hell they are probably going to last for decades (with resoles) if all you are doing is walking in them. some of the brands mentioned make work boots, which are more durable.

i almost forgot solovair, they are basically doc martens but without the decline in quality that doc martens have, they are made in the same factory that the docs used to be made in.

                red wing

Red wings are cheaper?? Have a look at their prices, plus they're a more rugged/work boot, not a dress boot.

That's 200 - 300 USD not AUD. And you'll likely have international shipping on top with greater risk regarding fitment and returns as a lot of those brands aren't sold here.

RMs are often on sale for between 400-450. You've been able to get them <$450 every single day for the last couple of months. You're not going to find many gyw shoes for much less than that - especially dress boots.

that's why i said to buy from international retailers, as the usual Australia tax gets added.

they have different lines, some boots are more for fashion while others are for work.

that's why i said it would probably be around 350 after converting the currency. if you are worried about fit, you should do a bit of research. i've purchased several pairs of boots internationally and the only times i had issues was when i didn't actually know my size and i was just guessing (i was 1 size off). every boot i've purchased after finding out my shoe size has fit just as well as any i've bought in a physical store, though you should always read reviews to find out if a certain manufacturer tends to run large or small.

                  Please actually provide some examples.

i did, you just chose not to read the comment properly or check out any of the examples provided before responding.

from what i've seen, the most common sizes tend to be sold out rather quickly in these sales (which is a problem for me as my size is a common one), leaving only the larger and smaller sizes available, though i will concede that there are not many dress boots in this range, they are not made any better just by virtue of being a dress boot.

this is a moot point if this price rise is accurate, it stands to reason that if the boot price is rising, so will the "sale" price, which may even end up being the old retail price.

          • @[Deactivated]: I'm also interested to hear of comparable alternatives. These are handcrafted in Australia from a single piece of Australian leather, and have been for generations. Their lifetime durability (if properly maintained) is beyond proven. If you know another boot that can match it, I'll buy it.

            • -1

              @Tenebrae: see my other comment.

"Their lifetime durability (if properly maintained) is beyond proven."

that doesn't justify the 500 dollar price tag, at all. many shoes are 100 - 200 less with their normal price (not sale price) and still retain this quality. you are paying for the brand name, not the quality. i'm not saying the quality isn't there, but these are fashion, not work boots, if you're just walking in them they aren't really being tested, a lot of boots will last a lifetime if you are just walking in them.

        • Hey but aren't resoling shoes costly

          • @PeeDee: it can be, you also have to find a good cobbler as some of them will cut corners and can ruin the boots. a resole is generally cheaper than a brand new pair of boots though and it doesn't bring with it the problems of the modern day such as once good manufacturers using cheaper, lower quality materials (doc martens).

some vintage boots / shoes are still in excellent, useable condition but newer boots from the same manufacturer will be falling apart after a year or two of use.

They don't have the rubber sole option. Only leather sole. Nowhere near as comfortable and the sole will wear quicker.

    • +3

I'm pretty sure comfort craftsman are the rubber sole option. Classic craftsman are their leather soled shoes.

    • I thought that Comfort Craftsman was always the rubber sole?

    • They've also got the Sydney boots which are leather soles.

  • because i havent seen anyone mention it yet: be sure to either triple check your sizes against size guide, or go get fitted at your local RM store.

    • I got fitted and ended up 1.5 sizes under my normal sneaker size… pretty weird, I went for only 1 size under my normal sneaker size, just in case.

      • no thats pretty common feedback, its weird how much off it is from 'normal'

        • I've seen a lot of people say that they maintained their (US) size as well, and the majority of comments say they're 1 size down from the (US) size - so effectively keeping the same size. I normally wear a 10.5US in sneakers, and I got sized as an 8

    • Yeah I realised how important that is as their size and length is vast. They have narrow, wide, and g, and sizes are in the 0.5s

      • I'm a size 8 US in Nike sneakers but only a size 6E (most narrow shoe) in the RMs.

        • How did you find out being 6E? I'm 8 Adidas and probably a 5F

          • @PeeDee: I went in store to try them on today lol
