New printer for school

Hey,

I'm in need of a new printer for school so the budget isn't that high and it needs to be able to print colour. So no monolaser printers.

So i am basically looking for a printer that is highly ink efficient (won't run out of ink fast or dry out if used every 4-5 days) and around the $100 preferably less? it also doesnt have do print very fast as i am just looking at a cheap printer to print word documents with the occasional picture that hopefully won't have me spending a fortune on ink cartridges.

So any recommendations??

Thanks

  • For notes, laser printer is most cost efficient.

  • I have a cannon printer ip4700 with a CIS unit. I infact did a video review of it on youtube.

CIS unit is around $60 on ebay, IP4700 when I bought it was $110 at officeworks. Very cheap operating costs if you go this route although the printer inks if bought off ebay are also very cheap as well, about $20 for 2 full sets. If you buy a secondhand IP4500 printer and go the second route, the ink cartridges are 1/3rd larger, IP4500 are superseded by the smaller ink higher model numbers now.

It is more effort to maintain a printer with a CIS but the savings can be worth it.

  • I suggest with one reservation the Samsung CLP-325W wifi colour laser. It can be bought for $135 at estore.com.au; if you first subscribe to their newsletter to get free $10 voucher takes it to $125, add other stuff eg. 2 x $56 genuine Black toner, to take the total over $200 for free delivery. Samsung black toner should last about 1500 pages. Samsung toners seems to be well priced and are often discounted. Cheaper non-geniuine cartridges are available. After the warranty period ends you could use an even cheaper toner refill kit at about $80 for 4 refills. So the running cost long-term is low.
My reservation is that the reviews indicate that the wifi on this printer may be problematic, so using a network cable instead of wifi may be necessary. However the price is lower than similar model without wifi. See reviews here http://reviews.us.samsung.com/7463/CLP-325W_XAC/samsung-clp-…

  • You might want to read this.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ink_cartridge

It gives a pretty good insight into what to look for.

Essentially looking for an older model inkjet increases the chances of getting either a CIS or a refillable ink cartridge. The difference here is cost vs convenience, plus the amount you will use the printer. Higher use then makes the CIS a better solution. I use might regularly and its very easy to refill, my bro uses it very rarely so its not worth the bother to set up the CIS, which is a little trickier. Refills are messier to do. Gloves and syringes are often needed. A little bothersome if you have to do it often, but its your money you are saving.

By googling the various inkjet replacement cartridge suppliers you can see what models are supported, then check the prices of those units. Manufacturers update units with new type cartridges to make it harder to get refills and defeat the chips in the cartridges.

And do you need all the "new" features? I would guess not.

Inkjet with non oem cartridges refilled or CIS are very cheap to run after the investment into these replacement units.

Canon and Brother are often the brands easiest to refill. HP Lexmark cartridges are harder as they also have the heads built into the cartridge.

And some inks could damage the printer over time. Its a crap shoot, I have had my 2 Canon MX800 series printers that are still going. The older is 5 years old, gets little use now, using refillable cartridges, the newer MX850 is 2 years old with a CIS, that is still going strong. My ink cost savings in the first 6 months would have more than paid for a replacement unit, so dont let this "bogey" put you off.

And this all should fit within your budget of around $100 and you can buy the refillable cartridges after your originals are starting to run out (but dont let them run out first)

  • Hmm, Looking into buying a ink jet then installing a CIS system. Any suggestions for a cheaper one the ones i've found seem a bit out of my budget

    Thanks

  • Sorry to say it but… Mono Laser!

Does school work really need coulour? I hear it a lot but cant understand why? The writing on assignments these days alone is enough to get you 30 lashes back in my day … yet they claim they must have colour printing?? mmmmmm

  • Epson Stylus Nx430

Always have had good luck with Epson printers. This printer seems a bit similiar to my TX 610 FW just minus fax. I has Wireless printing, fast performance and cheap cartridges! and look at the size of this thing, its so tiny !

  • Whatever you do, don't buy a Canon multifunction printer with Fax integrated. For e.g MX340 et al

Some of their models do not accept refillable ink cartridges.

  • Okay guys,

Just bought the colour laser from ebay i linked to in my last post. lets see how it goes :D
