Recommendations for New Fish Tank Filter

Hi all,

I am looking for recommendations for a new fish tank filter after our last one died over the weekend.

Fish tank is ~180L in volume and only holds goldish. Our old filter was a "Hang On" but happy to try cannister, submersible, etc for the right price/results. Preferably under $100 if possible (but can stretch if it is worth it).

Searches on Amazon and Ebay suggest that buying a fish filter is largely a "crap shoot" (equal number of good and bad reviews). Can anyone recommend a filter they would happily buy again?

Also, any comments/suggestions/thoughts about the following:

For goldfish it’s recommended to get a filter that flows:
    10x your volume for HOBs.
    5x your volume for Canisters.

So if you’re going to use a:
HOB, get one that flows 1800L/hour
Canister, get on that flows 900L/hour

You’re probably gonna have to spend more than $100 :)

Would definitely suggest a canister over a hang on back for that size tank. $100 isn't much of a budget for a decent one. Fishkeeping isn't cheap and shouldn't cheap out.

Definitely an Eheim cannister like a Classic 350/600 a.k.a 2215/2217. You can pick them up cheaper second-hand.

  • If you are willing to take a chance, I found this Eheim Classic 350 on Ebay for only $138…

Would post it as a deal on OzB, but something smells fishy (boom tish) about it…only 1 previous sale, seller only operated since 2021 and zero feedback.

Note it states UK 3 pin plug as well…
