Best unlocked smartphone in terms of value for money (no Apple!)

I am looking for help in finding what is the best smartphone in terms of value for money.
What it needs to have is as follows:

  • Touchscreen
  • good battery
  • good display
  • must be able to have a lot of Apps (Android)
  • must be able to connect to university e-mail systems (probably POP3 capability or other similar)
  • should be well-built
  • should be as cheap as possible
  • unlocked (so it works with Amaysim)

Alternatively to an unlocked phone, any phone with a good plan (mainly data is important) would work, too.

Any help, advice, assistance is very much appreciated. I am open to any brand as long as the above criteria are fulfilled.

Thanks,

Gallifrey

  • Price range? Or as cheap as possible?

  • Well, cheap but can cost some money as long as it is good quality. Can be something like a HTC or Samsung Galaxy etc. But obviously this is OZbargain - so as cheap as possible for a quality product.

  • What about Huawei Deuce Duplex or Huawei Ideos X5?

  • Or LG Cookie 3g T320?

  • Samsung i8150 Galaxy W for $270 delivered?

  • Samsung Galaxy Ace for $209 delivered (unlocked, and NextG capable)

    • Horrible display and very slow.

The Huawei X3 is $79 from Vodafone but I wouldn't get it again. You get what you pay for but I'd rather spend more than have to deal with a small screen and the laggy interface.

Another factor you should take into account is how much support the phone has. In my example, the X3 didn't have many users so installing a custom ROM on it is relatively difficult.

The X5 is undoubtedly faster though so that's a good choice if you can find a good deal on it.

  • Thanks guys (and girls).
From a previous post here the LG one 500 looks good at $108. I guess that is the choice. Alternatively, the Smsung i8150 Galaxy W looks good, too although a bit more moneythan anticipated.

To be honest getting a low cost smart phone is not that worth while. It often lacks in specs and that means laggy phone. :/ You're better off saving up for a more expensive one (getting a bargain price of course)that way it won't be so laggy and you won't have as much problems. :)

Agree. Get a phone that can last a few years.

  • I am on a $44 a month plan with virgin with a iphone 4. My 24 month contract finishes this August and it came with 300meg of data and 300 minutes free each month but no free texts :( that is why I am so into smsfun. I would get a really good phone on the cheapest plan they offer. I mainly use the iphone over wifi anyway to do voip calls from home instead of sitting at the computer.

I think the total cost is around $1200 and at the time the iphone 4 was $850 so I got mobile connection for around $175 a year if you minus the cost of the phone out which is not too bad, works out to be about $15 a month and I never used all my time either.
